I did this in March of 2020. I decided to sign up for an early March marathon on Christmas 2019 to force myself to exercise. I literally could not fit into any of my suit pants for a holiday event. I had ballooned to 212lbs at 6'1". I did have some running fitness because I ran a few interval workouts and some 1 hour runs in late November 2019 in order to extend my streak of running under 5:00 for the mile every year (I ran 4:51 in mid-December). My marathon buildup was 9 weeks where I averaged about 55 mpw and my longest run was 18. Two weeks out I ran a 16 miler with the last 8 at 5:50 pace (6:14 average for the whole 16). I decided to shoot for 2:45 in the race.
On race day I took off at what felt like a reasonable pace. Then I hit the mile in 6:00, way faster than the 6:17 pace I was hoping to average. I made the decision to keep running 6:00 pace. I made it 21 miles at that pace before the wheels came off big time. I had to stop and walk a few times between miles 21 and 24 but I actually got a second wind the last 2 miles and closed in 6:10, 5:58. My finishing time was 2:42 and change. Given the less than ideal buildup and the fact that I still weighed in at 197lbs on race day I think it may have been one of my best races ever (in relative terms, its still the slowest marathon I've ever run).
Based on this experience I'd say go for it. Just don't go too crazy in the early miles.
