Caitlyn was always a controversial figure in the LGBT community. If you think they just "turned on her" then you don't really get the whole history here.
The trans community (which contrary to popular belief on here) has ALWAYS existed, and has made small steps towards visibility for a long time. Look up Harry Allen, Christine Jorgensen, Marsha P Johnson, etc etc.
The thing is, trans activists created tons of leeway and space over time and in the 21st century, a lot of those trans folks were black trans women like Janet Mock and Laverne Cox.
But Caitlyn had the BIGGEST platform, and it was one that was created by a frivolous reality TV show. With the Diane Sawyer interview, she became the most famous trans person alive, and maybe the most famous ever. Her story made her a house hold name. For other trans activists it was a moment that was mixed. Suddenly they were visible, but the real activists got none of the credit.
It was like that journalist quote about trump "I worked on this story for months, and he just...tweeted it out!" Caitlyn deserved to live as herself, but the credit for her ability to do this and for everyone after her to do this should go to the trans people who made that moment possible. But we won't remember them. We'll instead remember Caitlyn.
Caitlyn is not a great spokesperson for the LGBT community. She has opposed same sex marriage, and supported Donald Trump. Typically the LGBT community stands firm with other marginalized people. Caitlyn generally only thinks of herself.
