Probably because this amounted to a very hard workout.
He ran his opening 3200m in 8:53. After running 2km at 4:26 pace, he ran an 8:53.4 for the next 8 laps, then closed his 'workout' with another 2km at 4:29 pace. Those 20 minutes were tough.
