The good - Tuohy is still a talent and will be competitive in college.
The bad - she still does not know how to race and has no racing instincts.
This is a result of her being protected her last two years of HS instead of being prepared fir the next level. No growth as a runner at all. Does the same thing every time she did in HS, go out hard and hold on as long as you can! It works in HS when you duck competition, but not college. This is why she will not win a NCAA title but will always be in the hunt, and get out kicked by the college elites.
I am not of the impression the 1500 will ever be her event, but I am not sure there is a better way for her to run it. Much like some other runners her strategy will have to be to run the kick out of her competition. Certainly somehow developing a shift of gears would be a plus. I'm not sure what competition she ducked in HS. On paper, Chmiel was as goof of a XC as anybody else her junior year. Senior year, in retrospect, she seems to have been messed up wit the knee issue. One other thing, she is running as fast a 1500 as she ever did in HS, while not being nearly as fast at longer races at this time. That I think will change.
completely agree with this....these 'ducking competition' comments are complete garbage. And not just the comments about Tuohy....Thorvaldson, Dudek etc etc....these were high school kids...nobody was ducking anyone.
And i would expect the 5000 to be Tuohy's race, not the 1500 - even though she is putting up solid times there right now.
Garbage????? Tuohy avoided Starliper on the Track ever since she lost to her at the Millrose games her Sophomore year! She scratched out of Millrose her JR and SR year to avoid losing a race to an athlete that was not afraid to race her and would have beaten her. She avoided Starliper her JR year of outdoors when Starliper traveled the whole way up to NY to race her in the 3200m and Tuohy scratched after her team saw Starliper was a late entry.
Ducking! Ducking! And Ducking!
I will say it is smart this happened because her legacy would be talked about differently with 3 loses to Starliper on her resume! And if she would have ran against Starliper in NY in that 3200m she would have saw her fade at the end like all her races and Starliper would have owed her 3200m record. Starliper is a good racer and would have sat and let Tuohy do alll the work and take over the race at the end. Instead Starliper had to solo a 9:54 instead of beating Tuohy and her record that day!
So now I’m sure I will hear a list of excuses for her scratching 3 races that Starliper was entered in?!?!?! Once maybe? Twice???? Three times...... obvious! As the old Saying goes, “ if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it’s a DUCK!!!!
One last thing before everyone goes crazy and says I’m a hater. I’m not!!! I just think it is a little crazy that everyone talks about Tuohy like she was the best and unbeatable in HS while an athlete like Starliper ran toward competition and never fled or was afraid of losing. And I think it is great they are teammates. When Starliper gets healthy it will be iron sharpening iron and they will be a dangerous and scary duo their JR and SR year of college! They both are HS stars that were injured their first year of college and will help each other get better and support each other.
