I see terrible form in global races too. If you’re fast enough, it doesn’t matter in most competitions.
Love to see Katie Rains improving. For whatever reason, I root for her.
The good - Tuohy is still a talent and will be competitive in college.
The bad - she still does not know how to race and has no racing instincts.
This is a result of her being protected her last two years of HS instead of being prepared fir the next level. No growth as a runner at all. Does the same thing every time she did in HS, go out hard and hold on as long as you can! It works in HS when you duck competition, but not college. This is why she will not win a NCAA title but will always be in the hunt, and get out kicked by the college elites.
She’s running 4:14 as a freshmen coming off an injury. Premature to predict she won’t win an NCAA title IMO - and even if she doesn’t, she’ll still be very successful - in fact, I’d say, 24th at CC and 4:14 as a frosh is pretty much on schedule given her injuries.
There’s still a lot of opportunity for her.
Go Cougs!
How long till the "she's coming off an injury" excuses are gone?
She is a true freshman running in races with top 20-something college athletes, most of whom were seniors and some of whom are just faster at this stage. Has nothing to do with race tactics, just development. And she ran more than her share of competitive races in HS. Anyway seems to be progressing quite well, but if you want the glass half empty, OK.
Well considering how well she is doing relative to other distance runner sin her class, she does not need any. Discount surgery and injury and missed training all you care to. Meanwhile she is the one with the AA results.

I am not of the impression the 1500 will ever be her event, but I am not sure there is a better way for her to run it. Much like some other runners her strategy will have to be to run the kick out of her competition. Certainly somehow developing a shift of gears would be a plus. I'm not sure what competition she ducked in HS. On paper, Chmiel was as goof of a XC as anybody else her junior year. Senior year, in retrospect, she seems to have been messed up wit the knee issue. One other thing, she is running as fast a 1500 as she ever did in HS, while not being nearly as fast at longer races at this time. That I think will change.
What is predictable is that you will always bring some snark to any Tuohy comments. I disagree that she has no racing instincts, or that she dodged anyone in high school. She always ran a very predictable schedule of meets with her team and of course senior track was wiped out.
You do have a point with tactics, as it's basically go out hard at some goal pace and hang on, even in all the NC State races. On the other hand, she has never been a kicker, and she is just now hitting an optimal fitness level, so I don't know if sit and kick, or perfect pacing would dramatically improve on her recent results.
With her 2:08 (maybe even a bit better now), 4:14 speed, she may be able to learn to close from 500 to 600m out rather than let races come down to a kick. She's also a decent athlete, so like Rupp, she might be able to develop a kick in college.
I am more curious now if she may actually hit any of the US trials standards this year. The standards are 4:06/15:25 and she is now at 4:14/15:47 with steadily improving fitness and a great training environment. There is no illusion that she can make a team, but qualifying is now in sight and trials would be a great learning experience.
completely agree with this....these 'ducking competition' comments are complete garbage. And not just the comments about Tuohy....Thorvaldson, Dudek etc etc....these were high school kids...nobody was ducking anyone.
And i would expect the 5000 to be Tuohy's race, not the 1500 - even though she is putting up solid times there right now.
Seems like it is time to move 1/2 of these comments to the Tuohy thread since there were many things much bigger that happened at this meet.
katelyn has never had the best finishing kick nor has a good finishing kick either, ever (except for nxn 2019) that is why she goes out hard, accelerate in the middle and tries to hold on to it ..
shes pretty much used to racing hard from the gun and has been successful in hs without having to develop a good kick because she was just faster than everyone which is totally not the case in college
its quite unfair to judge and sum up katelyn's college career based on her first 2 races on 1500m, shes up against seniors and juniors who have been racing more, and basically runs better than her
freshman(pls dont forget) katelyn is only been experiencing running w girls who are much faster and experienced than her .. still be able to put out good times and is able to run with the best most part of the race .. finishing kick is what is lacking (not racing strategy)
whats exciting to see is whether she will develop a good finishing kick to add to her powerful start and middle running times - once she is able to develop that, shes going to be a force to be reckon with

could not have said this any better!
excited to see her develop her finishing kick now that theres competition and many opportunities to develop it, classic katelyn tuohy is pretty much frustrated at her results and we all know she will work hard
shes improving every race, which is a really good sign for whats to come ..
tough to have a finishing kick when you run every race as a time trial. I can tell you this, she won't ever let somebody who is 10 seconds slower than her beat her in a race.
this board loves to complain about how everybody let mo farah sit and kick for 8 years. Tuohy is the type of runner who does not let a Mo Farah sit and kick.
appreciate her and enjoy her for what she is.
Tuohy was in a ton of close races in high school. And had a lot of really good battles where she came out on top and raced really smart. Anyway I think it's kind of a crazy criticism. Sure there is room for improvement and she is learning as she goes. But I think it's crazy to criticize her as either being someone with no instincts or someone who ducked other Runners as she ran almost all of the big meets and had tons of competition and had a lot of tough victories
Yep. Tuohy ran a ton of competitive races, especially in relays. There is even a video of her racing Watson and Huerta as an 8th grader. And the 2019 NXN sure seemed competitive and even tactical.
What's amusing is that I have rarely if never seen a tactical race on the high school level. It is always speed.
Find it funny how everyone is focusing on Kaitlyn Touhy and no one has lost their mind over the fact that Connor Mantz ran 3:37?!
Watch Kessler drop a 55 a few weeks ago.
We have conference, regionals, and sectionals coming up. It is common for 9 minute 2 milers to run 10 minutes in these meets and hammer the last 400 in 58. The meets are 1 day meets and qualifiers for state which is a multi day meet. I estimate that I have witnessed at least 100 tactical races in my lifetime.
