Emer McKee: Belfast 12-year-old sets new world 5km record
Does anyone else find it interesting if you look for an anagram of these 6 letters from the thread title? I wonder will she eventually hold the official WR for 5,000m like Bekele?

Age grades to 95% so very good but not out of this world.
Yes, beating the 5K age WR by 40 seconds isn't good enough.
Ping ran 16:44 on the track and I assume this new girl has the new fast road shoes.
This is so uninteresting. Even just on a state level, I can't tell you how many 12-14 year old girls especially were going to be superstars who just weren't. The parents get giddy because they know nothing, and then puberty isn't kind to the vast majority of those fast 12 year olds.
Even being fast through high school is no guarantee of continued success...and not just for the girls either.
Just yawn.

Well spotted Banana Bread.
I think her success is perhaps a sign sent by the running Gods that Bekele is going to triumph in Tokyo this year.
And if you look a little closer...
Emer McKee: Belfast 12 years.
It is 12 years from 2008 to Tokyo 2020 that Bekele ran fast to win double gold. These are definite omens that Bekele is going to defeat Kipchoge and take another historic gold.

The article says she ran 16:37 two weeks ago on a different course, but it wasn't officially timed so doesn't count.
Asterix!
I'm interested in the talent vs. intensity level. What did/could she have run without training? Is this a girl that went out for gym class one day and ran under a 6 minute mile? Or a kid who is like most other 12 year olds but pounds out 40 miles a week with heavy track/speed sessions? Most likely a combination of both. And with such talent, what's the "magic" age to begin training such a runner where she will succeed throughout high school and beyond?

You are everything that is wrong with this sport and with humanity quite frankly. If your instinctual reaction to a kid doing something super impressive is to take a crap on their accomplishment because they might suck later then you may want to examine your own personal issues and failures to achieve. It seems to be weighing on you.

Exactly. I mean shame on these kids getting the glory while they can. How DARE they?!? Minister flagpole sez you must only try hard at something after age 18 (or whatever).

I ran there last year in a 5k. It is fairly flat but not pancake. It has a couple of small hills. Definitely a fast course though, no sharp turns and a nice surface.
Yeah not perfectly flat but for a ‘road’ 5k as opposed to track or Parkrun it is pretty favourable. I was supposed to do a half marathon end of 2020 but didn’t materialise, should be running there next month or two though.
Is it exposed to wind or do the grandstands etc help any?

Well, not sure why that would be. I didn't emphasize performance for either of them ever, but especially not in middle school, and both of them became accomplished high school and college runners, getting better every year.

Not taking a crap on her accomplishment. Taking a crap on anyone who would post about it. I have no personal issues...just experience with seeing young kids do well in running and then suck later. Let me know when any kid is doing super well as a junior in high school.

Well he does have a point. It's cool for the family, but as fans of the sport, this accomplishment shouldn't get anyone's hopes up that she's going to be the next rising superstar of distance running.
well flagpole is a known idiot/troll going back some 20 years here - just don't pay attention to the fool

CORRECT!
Look all you angry bitter naysayers who like to beat up on kids online! She did it again! Another opportunity to remind us how we shouldnt care that she performed so impressively because all that matters is if you are breaking world records as an adult. Not what amazing things you rightfully accomplish as a kid. That reminds me, this Knighten kid? Completely unimpressive... Talk to me when you are 22 and actually winning not some 17 year old punk getting third place in a race. So what if you run faster than Usain Bolt and you did something amazing today. You'll be working at Dairy Queen by next summer because Im an anonymous crank online whose seen it all before and enjoys crapping on kids accomplishments...
