Obviously
Grace Ping.
Isn't a 16:40 5k for a 12 year old girl extreme? How intensely does a 12 year old have to train to average 5:21 pace for 3.1 miles? Most high school girls can't run 10:42 for 2 miles on the track, let alone add another mile to that. Crazy natural talent or high mileage and lots of speed training?

short course maybe, Astro?
Wonder what Emer Coburn ran for 5k at 12?
"Normally I'm just running as fast as I can and just waiting for it to be over," she told BBC Radio Ulster.
LOL
Age grades to 95% so very good but not out of this world.

It’s a world record for the age, so isn’t it by definition age-graded to 100%? Or is that not how it works?
Chicked by a pre-pubescent girl. Not my proudest day, but congrats to her.

Not exactly no

It's an algorithm. For comparison, the 3K record is 9:19 which is 99% (Imogene Stewart, AUS)
An amusing study of age records if anyone is interested, lol.
Regarding country, runners from Canada were slower than runners from the United States of America in 5 km by 00:10:05 h:min:s (p < 0.001) and in half-marathon by 00:18:43 h:min:s (p < 0.01).
It's a roughly 2.6km loop of asphalt service road around a racetrack (horses that is - Down Royal Racetrack) and very flat as a result. Won't have been short as they do official races there very often, including series by ChampionChip Ireland, one of the official chip suppliers. It became one of the go-to locations for organisers/companies over 2020, with most of any of the events that could be scheduled, held here. Tommy Hughes ran some of his events here including record attempts. Another 3 events scheduled for May, including a marathon and a 10k by ChampionChip, and a 50km/100km ultra by NIURA (Northern Ireland Ultra-Running Association).
A very flat, even and fast course though it has to be said.
I ran there last year in a 5k. It is fairly flat but not pancake. It has a couple of small hills. Definitely a fast course though, no sharp turns and a nice surface.
The article says she ran 16:37 two weeks ago on a different course, but it wasn't officially timed so doesn't count.

Yes, beating the 5K age WR by 40 seconds isn't good enough.

flat or not, she ran a 16:40 and shes TWELVE.... She could have been shot out of a cannon and finish in 16:40 and it still would be incredibly impressive. Hard to comprehend really. All this Grace Ping talk --- when Ping shocked the world as a 7th grader at Roy Griak she ran an 18:12. Now, Roy Griak is a more difficult course than this one no doubt but it really makes me wonder what this kid could have done against that field. Or at Running Lane. Also, what do we know about the times for the other competitors in her race? Was she minutes ahead of second place? I did read somewhere that she actually fell during this race, hard enough to bloody up both knees. But she got back up and kept going to her credit. Makes you wonder what time she would have had if she hadnt fallen... 16:30??
Ping ran a 16:44 on the track at age 12
