3:43 pace through 60% of the race is an idiotic plan?
When you add 13 seconds to that pace over the final 500m, it sure is. It's "high school freshman who just watched 'Rudy'" style. Definitely not something an actual pro would do.
For a guy with a PR of 3:42 and a recent season's best of 13:22 for 5K, going out in 3:43 pace is NOT an idiotic plan, no matter how it ended up. Obviously he had a bad one, but the pace was totally reasonable. In contrast, a 3:42/13:22 guy going out in, say, 3:47 pace would have been a waste of time (in a race where the focus is on time rather than place), even if he got to look cool by "finishing strong."
