He always rabbits for the field, goes through a 49 second and fades at the end. How can you be professional but be so tactically sloppy?

I had a teammate that always went out in 60-62 at the slowest
as a junior he did 2:09, then a senior he ended up 2:03 flat track [converted to 2:01]
No outdoors sadly but I guess it's the same idea, go out fast and die less hopefully, just it sounds more like a high school strat then a pro one
Considering he’s from Puerto Rico, he probably dominates using that strategy. No need to fix it if it ain’t broke.
It’s laughable on the world stage, but to each their own I guess.
He almost beat brazier in a 600, so I’m sure he has potential to run faster. Maybe one day he will stop racing the 800 like a HS sophomore-junior and be more competitive on the world level.
Guys can run this way for a few reasons:
a) don't trust their finish
b) fast-paced race is the best race for them
c) not confident/comfortable running in packs
I think all three maybe apply to Vasquez. He holds on decently well after leading fast races. He's a big guy, so maybe not the shiftiest as far as working his way up or making a definitive move. Being a frontrunner can be a good strategy if behind you there is enough chaos as the rest of the pack fights for positioning/runs extra distance. The problem for Vasquez I would say is that he's not capable of going out so fast that he completely screws up the race plan of others and his top-end ability of 1:43-mid isn't going to be enough, either. So, even if he runs his best race, usually 3-4 guys will come screaming by him in the last 100.
Because one of these days, he's going to hold on and surprise everyone!
That series of videos was terrible to show your point. It was mostly him going out fast and not showing his finish except for races where he won.
But there are different types of 800 runners.
5th at the World Championships is nothing to sneeze at.
And a 1:43 PR ain't so bad either.
But sure, 48.9 is too fast to go out in.

Would he have gotten third if he let the others stay closer to him?
The medalist all had 1:42 PRs.
Maybe he's on the same stuff as Kipketer?
Nerves.

Malaria?
?
I was referring to the Kipketer who likes to run the first lap in 48 seconds and who was suspended recently by anti-doping.

I’ve seen this before. It’s generally for 400/800 types who don’t have much aerobic power.
Generally, they will run out of gas at the same point in the race. So, bathe faster they get to that point the better. If he runs slower, he might still die the second lap.
Interestingly, Seb Coe ran some "suicidal" races early in his career ( I remember one where he was way ahead of John Walker half way through the race). But one day he just kept going and they didn't catch him. Maybe, that's the plan.
any footage?
He has to do it that way because he's too big to get there with a less positive split. Little scrawny monkeylike runners don't understand how much faster fatigue happens when you're heavy.
Certainly seems like a Jeff Thies wannabe.

I don't think it was this one. Of course we've only got the ending. If it was this one, it might me that Coe built up a big lead and then Moorcroft chased him, and finally Walker ran them both down.
