What's the optimal period for marathon training?
26 weeks, 18, 12 or 8?
Seems 18 weeks period is quite popular but this may increase the risk of injuries.
I tend to settle well in 12 weeks training.

A lot depends on where you're at. If you're already fitish, twelve week plans are very common.
Training or peaking?
Optimal training - year round.
Optimal peaking - depends on training.
Numbers are meaningless without knowing where you come from.

26 weeks of focused training sounds like a recipe for burnout. Keep the ball rolling year round and sharpen into peak shape with 2-3 months of especially diligent training and taper.
If you're starting from scratch though, like after a break of half a year or more, 16-18 week plans are probably the minimum.
Canova said even 1 year is not enough, if you want to run your fastest marathon. He explained Sondre Moen training as an example.
I feel like you train year round for the marathon but something structured in the last 8-16 weeks works best for most. I like 12. But you could go back and take a look at the workouts/base building that precede the last 12 & call it a 16/18/26 week build. The last 12 just get the most specific. I think it's a manageable way to look at it & lessen the risk for injury if you're trying to do 18 weeks of actual marathon training. That's a long time. Everybody is different tho.
