Using the slower than normal response to this post, I'm going to use that as a data point to suggests a lower cutoff, or lower than many expect. There's going to be pent up travel demand this summer, but there's still some hesitancy, which I think is going to lower the number of people who put in an application. I think all the issues, and potential issues with international travel all but wipes out the international runners this year at Boston. I think that'll be the #1 factor resulting in lower demand.
Still, I think there are hardcore Boston runners who are excited to get back, and something that hasn't been mentioned is the allure of the 125th Boston. I've heard a few friends who run Boston every now and then say they want to be there for that milestone. Plus the two year qualifying window...
So I'll venture a guess at a cutoff of 3:50.
One other thing I forgot to mention, as a small but probably overlooked factor that'll keep some people away from the actual even this year. BAA decided to let streakers continue their streak even if they run the virtual race in 2021. So some of the streakers who would have otherwise entered to maintain their streak will take advantage of this BAA policy and not enter the in person race.
This feels about right. I'm guessing 3:00 - 5:00 minutes. The long qualifying window will also create some funny situations. For example, a person could have run a race in October 2018 when they were 33, and not met qualifying standard for the 2020 race for the 18-34 age group. But, since they will be 35 on race day 2021, their time may from October 2018 may now be good enough, and they may have essentially aged into qualifying with the same race.

Thats a good point!
too many known unknowns to come close this year
even with the much longer than usual qualifying period, with so many races cancelled last year, it's almost impossible to get a reasonable handle on the qualifier pool
even harder to estimate true demand... higher this year after no in-person race? lower because of the myriad Covid issue? travel difficulties? fewer international entrants?
some folks are opting out just because 'it won't be the same' this year
but i will take a stab.....with the field being 2/3's the size of recent years... my guess is there will be a significant cut-off time.... but less than 5 minutes

Damn, is that true? I've been sweating losing my streak for nothing then. I was thinking how lame it would be for people's streaks to be ruined because of Covid.

yes
(Q) WILL COMPLETING THE VIRTUAL BOSTON MARATHON IN 2021 COUNT TOWARDS MY CONSECUTIVE FINISH STREAK?
(A) Yes. If an athlete completes either the virtual or in-person Boston Marathon in 2021, their consecutive finish streak will extend by one year. If an athlete does not complete either the in-person or virtual Boston Marathon, their streak will come to an end.

How long is the race time used for Boston good for? I think I heard 18 months. Or is it 12 months? I turn 49 in August of this year. Wondering if a time next month could be used when I turn 50? I'm probably too close to the cut-off in my current AG.

they haven't announced the 'qualifying period' for 2022, but they will in the next few weeks
it used to be roughly 18 months; but now it's roughly 12 months.... but that 12 month period starts in September of the year 2 years prior to the race date
if i read your post correctly, you don't turn 50 until August of 2022.. so you'd be talking about Boston 2023.. and the qualifying period is likely to run from September of 2021 to the normal registration period in September of 2022.. assuming they go back to the way they did it prior to this year
you can be 49 on the date of your qualifier and still use it if you age up and will be 50 on Patriots' Day

Streakers are accepted as long as they achieve a BQ. There is no cutoff for them beyond a BQ. They were able to start registering last week.
I was curious about the how many runners came from other countries so I looked at results from 2019. I found about 4000 runners from other countries only counting countries with 100 or more. This would be countries like Canada with almost 1700 and most of the others with 100 to 400 runners including Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Great Britain, Ireland, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Australia, Mexico. Based on what I found I would estimate the total would be between 4500 and 5500 of the finishers in the 2019 race were from other countries. The travel restrictions for the citizens of some of these countries will likely mean many will not register for the 2021 Boston Marathon. If they have a streak they can register now for the virtual race to maintain the streak. I suspect few Canadians will be able to race at Boston if the current mandatory quarantine requirement in Canada is still in effect. I hope there are not a lot who register from various countries who later are not able to travel to Boston to the race. I know some are registered for the Glass City (Toledo) Marathon to be run this coming weekend who will not be racing due to travel restrictions. I am sure they are many in Canada and the US registered for the Detroit International Marathon this October but some expect the race to be canceled once again because the course starts in Detroit, crosses into Canada and finish back in Detroit. A highlight is watching the sun rise while running over the Ambassador Bridge into Canada.

I received my acceptance confirmation. In 2019 I had a stroke. I've recovered 90% on the left side of my body, my left leg just don't fire like it used too. So this will be my last right on Hereford left on Boylston.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that. So you had a streak of 10 or more I assume, correct? You think you could make some sort of miracle comeback and run a BQ in the future? or no?

It's generally a 12 month window, mid sept to mid sept, So there' basically 3 "shots" each year; late fall, spring, or early fall.
But Covid has f**ked everything up, If I was a betting man, I'm going to guess the 2022 Qualifying window will be set at Sept, 2019 thru Oct, 2021 (so the Oct 2021 Boston can be used).

I was able to run 20 consecutive years mostly re-qualifying for Boston at Boston. After the stroke and with all the rehabbing I have done my average pace is a minute slower than it used to be. My neurologist says with the nerve damage to the left side of my body that's as good as it's going to be, And I'm okay with that because I am still alive and running/jogging. Will I try to re-qualify of course Will it happen probably not.

20 years of qualifying, that's impressive.
If you just miss it, I might tell that story to the BAA, and they may make an exception. You're only 5 years from the quarter century club
I think allowing runners to pass into next age group without rerunning for their latest age isn't fair. Anyone within 5 minutes of my cutoff time who aged into the next group over the last 2.5 years now jumps ahead of me up to 5 minutes. My suggestion that I sent to the race directors last year was to only allow (1) those who registered for 2020 register to re-register for 2021 with age adjustment and (2) those who ran a qualified subsequent to the 2020 qualifying period. I think the cutoff will be high - 8 minutes . Lots of pent up demand.
