Cuba has had so many great jumpers in the high jump, long jump, and triple They are like Jamaica with sprinters or Kenya with distance runners.
I used to watch that WR jump all the time a kid. Like all records it will go down at some point I am sure. A few years ago I would have said Barshim but doubt it at this point.
Crazy how ahead of the competition Carl Lewis, Mike Powell, Javier Sotomayor were. Always wondered why the TJ was an outlier in the sense it seems like there has continued to be incremental progress.
Yeah I love watching the jumps, I think Zango will get close to the triple jump record in Tokyo he just broke the indoor record this year.
Better Bodies Through Chemistry!
Anyway, this was the GOAT high jumper: won 154 consecutive competitions, not including qualifying competitions or exhibitions; improved the world record 14 times; and equalled it once outdoors and once indoors. The last record lasted ten years.

Or if you insist on a male GOAT, maybe Valeriy Brumel:

All of that said: Because of two Olympic boycotts by Cuba, IMO Sotomayor has rarely received the credit that he deserves *for his full career* and not just his world record(s), so thanks to malmo for the post!

What are you talking about?? Are you being sarcastic.
The men's and women's triple jump records have stood since 1995!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_jump_world_record_progression#MenCould high jumpers use the new super shoes for a little extra bounce on takeoff?

Not sarcastic and you are right. The outdoor LJ WR is only 4 years older and the HJ only 2 years older. I was just thinking about the indoor WR from earlier this year and forgot how far ahead of the field Edward’s was.

There are rules about how thick the soles of a HJer's shoes can be. Yuriy Stepanov set a WR in 1957 with thick, springy soles and the IAAF nixed them shortly thereafter. I believe the limit is 12mm but could be wrong about that.
Apologies for terrible autotranslation: Yuri Nikolaevich Stepanov
https://www.tellerreport.com/sports/2019-10-15---russia-1957--the-first-magic-sneaker-of-records-.SyWgCS5MFr.htmlGuy jumps eight feet then fails to do a backflip and lands on his head and neck.

And only one person has surpassed a mark set almost 53 years ago.
He had two doping suspensions....cocaine and anabolic sterods
I saw Sotomayor jump in person in NY in the early '90s. Unbelievable. Most high jumpers do a rounded, J-shaped approach. Sotomayor's was more like an L -- slow loping runup, then a hard, sharp turn with incredible torque applied the last couple strides before takeoff. Most mortals would break their ankles trying the Sotomayor approach. Never seen another high jumper with that violent an approach.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
