5x800 at mile pace sounds absolutely horrible. I personally wouldn’t do that workout regardless of rest time.
5-6x800m at 3k-5k pace is a better workout. Throw some fast 100s or 200s in at the end and you have a solid day.

I've never done 800s at mile pace, but the general suggested workout if you want to do that is 3x800, right? How much rest? 2 minutes?
I don't know. Usually when I do this workout it's on Sunday when there isn't team practice. I do all 5 at or a little slower than mile pace with 3:30 recovery. That means I'm splitting around 2:17s.

Training is about progression. What workout is going to follow this one and what is the real purpose?
You’re doing a 25 minute workout wherein you cover 4000m in about 11:25. That’s a kind of workout a 14:30-14:45 guy should be doing.
