Was curious and could not find any result anywhere. Some old guy out there knows I bet.

No recorded mile time on the world Athletics website but going by his 5000 and 10,000 m times one concern is that he would’ve been around 342 to 345 for 1500 m which equals 4:00 to 4:03 for the mile. He had quite a bit more leg speed compared with Bill Rodgers.
If I’m wrong in my assessment may the cognoscenti put me in my place.
Found one mention, 4:02.6 (1974).
Not bad Ghost1...I was thinking he did not break 4, but had to be close.
thanks Detron. Any more info on that race?

I remember reading about Shorter running a workout of mile/1320/880/440 beginning with a 4:05.
Athletic Net (
https://www.athletic.net/trackandfield/SchoolRecords.aspx?SchoolID=21597
) shows Yale's top 20 performances in all track and field events. But...the Mile has three entries - fastest 4:45! It does show Shorter holds the school record for the 6-mile (29 flat) -- never to be broken, I imagine!
Surely Shorter ran several mile races when he was at Yale, although I think (this is from memory) he did not get his breakthrough improvement until the spring of 1972, after he had finished all his coursework and was basically training until graduation.
I think in dual meets they would not have run the 3-mile and the 6-mile, so the mile might have been Shorter's event. The Ivy Championship and the Heps would have included the longer races, however.
This is not ancient history; there have to be records on some websites.

From a T&F perspective, it is ancient history. Finding dual meet results would require a trip to the library and going through microfiche files.
