At the end of fast workouts, like short reps, I often run home at threshold pace. The reason is to use the opportunity to train lactate clearance from the fast work, as well as add more higher pace volume.
I have several times experienced that after a fast workout it is easy to run a fast threshold without having to work for it. Last Saturday I did a 6min threshold prior to and immediately after 8x40s hill work and again the threshold after the hill work was faster and "easier".
This Saturday I set out to combine it. I did 2x40s hills hard (with 80s jog down between), then 30s jog after second hill, then 5min threshold in a loop ending at the bottom of the hill, then 45s jog and then repeated the same 3 more times.
It sounds like a tough workout, but it is quite manageable. It feels hard to go for a threshold so short after an intense hill repeat, but threshold pace is quite optimal at clearing lactate and is a pace way easier than the hard hill. After 5min of threshold, a 45s jog was quite enough to manage 2 hard hills again with quite fast splits for my own efforts.
I did this workout due to 2 effects. The first to work on lactate clearance during the threshold reps. The second to do thresholds when feeling more "activated" achieving a slightly faster pace.
Could anyone explain what happens with the "activation"? We talk of maybe up to 5 s/km faster pace here. It might be several reasons for the "activation" and the feeling of "easier" effort. Maybe I psychologically feel the threshold effort to be so much easier than the hard hill that I just go faster. I think I am quite good at going steady by feel based on how well I hit my splits every time. Or I activate fast twitch muscle that helps running faster. Or I prime the legs mechanically to just run with better speed and economy? It is an interesting concept...
I do not know but I think I will experiment with adding a couple of hard short reps before thershold work to gain this activation more times, but not necessarily combine hard hils with threshold work every time though.
