This is basically the reason (not that it would "embarrass women even more" -- seriously, gtfo). If we switched to women's decathlon, then we're requiring a different blend of not only skills, which can be learned, but physical attributes, which cannot. Many great heptathletes would not be competitive. If we were designing the sport from scratch in 2021, we'd absolutely have women's decathlon. But nobody wants to put a bunch of elite athletes out of business.
One could also ask why the men don't do heptathlon. There are unquestionably men who would be absolutely phenomenal at it, but who aren't competitive as decathletes. Either way, the parameters of an event (even a multi-event) are somewhat arbitrary. Neither is inherently better than the other.
If we are going to do women's decathlon, the way to do it would be with a very long transition. Start doing it in college and in occasional pro meets. Set a date several Olympiads away for the final switch over. That gives younger athletes time to plan their development and also ensures that established pros don't have the rug pulled out from under them.
