As far as I am concerned, there are three areas that need to be honed in order to be successful at distance running. They are, in no particular order, general endurance, strength, and speed. In other words, you need to get fit, get strong, and get fast.
The Tinman training philosophy seems to encompass these areas perfectly.
The long tempos and 1k reps @ 10k pace are great for strength. Especially the latter. Unlike 1k reps that many coaches prescribe, these will improve your strength without destroying you.
After these two strength workouts, raw speed is to be worked on [according to Tinman]. This includes all-out 100m ("striders" if you will) or 200m reps.
Lastly, the long run at an easy pace and the rest of easy mileage just for general fitness/general endurance.
Thoughts??
