I have a continuing cycle where i run 70mpw for 4 weeks and on the fifth week i take Saturday off and run 60 instead. Does this really matter and am i just wasting aerobic fitness?

What I've found helps running high mileage (90-100mpw) is doing an easy 4-5 every Saturday or at least once a week. I believe Lydiard had his guys do a 30 minute jog on Fridays to recover, and if you use it as a recovery, not as a day you would normally gain fitness, it will likely benefit you more than hurt you in the long run.
