in high school, a true stud in the mile will almost always be very competitive, if the not the fastest runner, in the 400 as well.
Especially early in the season before the sprinters are really sharp.
I would run the 3200 in the days when that was the first event, so everything else could be set up, etc., then the 3200 relay, the 1600, then I'd run the third leg of the 4x400 if I wasn't too tired.

Sounds like you have bad 400m runners in your area...

maybe so. but in mid april, when that stud 1600 guy is running a 50 to 52, he's gonna be very competitive. Especially in a dual meet or low key invitational.
Even a 48 guy might be floundering in that range with two months remaining in the season.
as far as girls go, well, this thread is about a girl ALMOST winning with a 58.xx. Not an amazing 400 time, but really freaking good, and seriously competitive at a typical dual or invite.

look at the results from the invite in the op. this is what times look like in a typical mid april high school invite.
some of you guys spend too much time reading about the Reinhardt Harrison's of the world, and don't have a realistic concept of what high school track looks like.
both are mediocre performances from a runner with a 2:08 PR in the 800. With 2:08 you should be able to run 56 and 4:40. Still early in the season though, she'll get there.

Weird that you assume you’re the only high school coach on a running website.
50-52 is not fast. I don’t care about dual meets, or poorly trained sprinters. Thats irrelevant noise.
If you have decent 400 runners in your area, then 50-52 will land you in the third heat. This coming from a washed up 51 400m distance runner.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Rest in Peace Adrian Lehmann - 2:11 Swiss marathoner. Dies of heart attack.
