Sid Rhyant was another name from Mansfield that I remember, if I have that spelling right. I grew up a couple counties west of there and was a few years younger. I was a mid-to-back of the back guy for Gannon.

1500 - 3:49.7
Mile - 4:12.2
3000 - 8:16.4
5000 - 14:22.8
Made the mistake of focusing on the 3k and 5k in my last year of college, I was probably good for 3:45 or so but I thought I'd have a better shot of translating my speed into a ~14:00 5k by just upping the volume on everything.

Feel like I should also be at least somewhat helpful and mention when I first broke 16:00, I'd run 1:58 for 800, 4:21 for 1600, and 9:30 for 3200. I did it in a cross country race though. Most of the D3 friends breaking 16:00 on the track for the first time in college were at least 4:40/9:20 for mile and 3k.

So I definitely have been around that just under sub 16 shape.

The first time I ever ran a 5K was some combo road and trail race. I ran 17:40.
It was my sophomore year of college and I was recovering from an injury and did not run XC.
I never ran XC until my junior year of college.
I had an 800m PR of 1:55 at the time and never ran a race farther than 800m.
The second time I ever ran a 5K, I jumped in a fun run with a friend and won it in about 15:30 or so.
But that was 4 years later and by then my PRs were:
800 - 1:49
1500 - 3:42
8K XC - 25:30
My eventual 5K PR was 14:55 in a road race I won easily, but felt I could have gone 30 seconds faster.

Went sub 16 for the first time my freshman year in college. Increasing my weekly mileage to a consistent 70-80 miles per week was what helped me the most.

Interesting post! I am still saddened over Coach Winrow's passing. I have fond memories of him. I graduated from Mansfield University December of 84. I still keep in contact with Chris Cody. Years ago, I spoke with Ed Osborn. He is a teacher and coach at a high school. My best runner years were when he worked out with us. He had recently graduated and his passion for running was very contagious. I recently retired from my job, so I devote a lot of time with our eleven year old daughter. She is very athletic and talented! I am still running and competing in road races.

My mileage when I actually broke 16 was probably like 35mpw but leading up to it I kept 45-55. 3200 was done 2 weeks after my 5k, probably like 30 a week. My mileage for my mile PR was around 45mpw without a taper, this was indoor season 2020. For my 800 and 400 PR's that was from the spring before sub 16 and I was probably doing around 20 mpw, lots of speed stuff. I havent had any real efforts further than 5k so it doesn't give much insight but my half PR is like 1:27

Dang that's impressive. Considering that your 8k/10k (I'm assuming that's 8k/10k?) are right around sub 16 pace with the 8k faster than sub 16 pace and the 10k in the mid 16:20s, it sounds like you get better with the distance. Maybe try a half or a full!
