So I had an athlete (female, 20) do a workout yesterday, which was 2 x 1 mile, first mile at goal 5k pace, 2nd mile all out, 6 minutes rest between both reps. Her times were 5:38, and 5:16.
Now im no college coach, just a local run club assistant distance coach. Last friday she had ran a track 5k in 18:18. Im curious as to what potential this workout may indicate for her 5k, as I would like to make sure I take her in the right direction. For reference, she runs a 5:05 mile, and 2:16 800m.
If she ran an 18:18 5k only a week ago then no matter what workout she does it points toward her being in 18:18 shape.
Workouts are rarely more predictive than a race itself. If she ran her 5k well (no crazy training or fatigue going into it or big tactical blunders) then there's nothing a 3200m long workout can tell you more than what her 5k actually showed.
She has good track times in the mile and 800m. I've seen people with slower marks run faster 5ks and I've seen people with faster marks run slower.
