I've never seen a sample but had a good talk with him once. He was influenced by Bill Squires. I recall him telling me he'd have workouts where he'd combine multiple things into a session. That's not a good description but an example I remember was giving people long reps, 1320s, miles, etc. but having them run the last 400 at a much faster pace, hoping to develop both strength and speed. Aside from that he seemed to use the usual things, good volume, long runs, etc.
But the most interesting thing to me was that he did not believe the training he gave his kids was the main reason for their success. He said that was mostly due to the relationships his athletes had to each other and to their coaches. Their whole social life was built around each other, when they had time to kill between classes and didn't want to go back to their dorms they'd most likely drop by the track office and see who was there to hang out with. This was completely consistent with what Tom Donnelly told me when I had a similar chat with him a few years later.
Makes sense. If you think your training is working, it’s gonna work.
I believe Mark Coogan was coached by Charles at Maryland.
It would be great for a LetsRun piece on Mark and the many influences in his running and coaching career.
Are there any legitimate trends or examples of "progression" from those teams? I'm not questioning the improvement, but am more so curious at what differentiated them from the other schools in the A10, or even the teams currently rostered that have also seen great success.
his teams were good, and charlie was an excellent coach. everyone in the philly college running scene knew this.
no coach has ever been good enough to survive the scrutiny of the letsrun hit squad, but yes torpey was an effective and beloved old hardass, who got great results... and is genuinely missed.

This could not have been a serious post.
