It was only Ringer's second marathon but he has been pretty good on the track before with European medals. Unfortunately a rather inconsistent performer. After dominating the 10000m cup in London in spring 2018 with a pretty good mark he was a non-entity both at the Euros 2018 (dnf 10k, IIRC) and worlds 2019 (not making the 5k final).
wow, i am very pleased. for a while the marathon didn't go too well for the germans and arne gabius (40yo) was alone there. and now:
amanal petros (2:07:18), ringer (2:08:49), pfeiffer (2:10:18) und simon boch (2:10:48).
ringer's 5000m pb is good.

Thank you.
Ringer's goal was sub-2:10. He ran a tune-up half marathon in 61:33.
Looks like his road times are getting closer to his track times - 3:38, 7:46, 13:10, 27:36 a bit like Alberto Salazar (USA), although Salazar ran 2:08 in the 1980s.
ASICS Metaspeed - The shoe was worn by Ringer in Siena. Wanders, Moen, Ringer, Robertson et al....go ASICS Metaspeed.

In the pic one of the Robertson’s with ASICSMetaspeed.
Ringer’s training recovery tool.
ringer posts all his training on strava. good read: interview, spiegel, 2020.12.04. google translate is your friend or i will help.
ringer says, the bouncing tech shoes help with 2-3sec per kilo but one needs to get used to.
really great news that four guys from germany are capable of 2:07-2:10. they ran in conditions somewhat less than perfect.

With Ringer's 5k &10k time, and today's typical time trial-type marathons, along with shoes, he should be around 2:04. However, once you're approaching 140 pounds in the marathon, it makes it that much harder. He's running against a lot of guys who are 100-125 pounds.
I don't buy that. 2:07 is still a great time for a non-East African. No one thinks Rupp should run 2:04 and he's a lot better than Ringer. 2:04 is a time that puts someone in the game for WMM wins and global medals. No one expects that from Europeans or Americans, or even Japanese
Do you know who won a medal in the just the last Olympics?
Sure, Rupp is better than Ringer and really should be a 2:02 runner. He's already beaten countless 2:04 guys. I don't recall Rupp ever running one of those loaded, perfectly paced time trials such as Berlin. He has however run 2:06 low on a poor course with piss poor pacing and barely any competition.
Ricky Ringer, Deutschland, height weight, 1.82/63 kg (5.11/139)
You are right that he has a height and weight disadvantage but if you look at Sondre Moen 1.78/62 (5.10/137), the Norse is even stockier than Ringer and ran 2:05.
Sondre Moen, built almost like a soccer player

He's run Chicago twice, which is a fast enough course that world records have been broken there. 2:06 is his ceiling. He can beat 2:04 runners but he needs them to have an off day, which is a fair bet in the marathon. He'll also be better in global champs than WMMs since the global champs can't load up on sub-2:04 runners from East Africa like the WMMs do

Oddly, Rupp had won a WMM and medaled at global championships
Sure you know that both times he ran Chicago it wasn't set up for super fast times. The last one was a fast race but I think we all know Rupp was running with an injury and had surgery shortly thereafter.
