Hello, I am needing advice on mileage and base training. My goal is to run sub 18 for the 5k by the end of my senior
cross country season, which is coming up soon. That being said, I would like to be in roughly 18:20's shape in about
16 weeks. I know it varies based on runner, but what is a solid weekly mileage for the 5k time I am going for? I want
to stick with a base-style approach, so I don't want to throw in intervals or anything to speedy. I just want to get
my aerobic and muscoskeletal system in top-notch shape so I can really throw down in the fall during my XC season,
and hopefully work to a sub 18 during the season. I am 17 years old, my current mileage is about 35 miles/
week. I run those miles at a steady/easy pace which is usually around 7:55-8:20. I also do strides and hill sprints 2-3
times a week. I have not been very consistent lately so I will definitely get better at that, and I have been doing
strength training roughly once or twice a week.
Anyways, here are my questions:
1. What kind of mileage per week should I work towards for an 18:20's 5k, given that I have 16 weeks until the season starts?
2. Are there any other kind of workouts I should structure into my plan to help build my aerobic system so I am ultimately ready to work to a sub 18 during season, and when should I structure them in? i.e. early, middle, end of plan...
I appreciate any help and advice you have for me.
