The majority of people on this website have a very skewed idea of what talent is when it comes to running, and to be fair, it’s really hard to define.
I know runners that break 18 freshman year that work hard and only run mid 17s by the time they graduate.
I personally didn’t break 30 minutes in a full 5k my freshman year (I was a middle-linebacker that chose to stop playing because my highschool team lost 49-0 every game and it just wasn’t fun for me anymore) but I ran a 16:07 at 6’1 175 lbs for footlocker my senior year.
By many’s standards, I would’ve been considered the most untalented mfer to ever live my freshman year, but by the end of my highschool career I was state class, and not far from being a footlocker all American. Not to sound braggy, but I’d say it takes a lot of talent to run that fast with a 400m runner type build and 35-40 mpw.
I had a smart and well achieved runner tell me it can take up to 6 years for talent to show itself. If you train for a year and aren’t fast, you’ve still got a shot. If you train for 5-6 and you aren’t fast you probably aren’t all that talented at distance running.
Keep working hard, and don’t listen to anybody that tells you anything about your potential cause they dont know.
Good luck!
