Do you know anyone with autism?
Statistically, less than 2% of the population has autism.
We live in an age of LGBTQ, BLM, female equality and every group under the sun (seems that way) that seems to
make the headlines.
Do you feel those on the spectrum are under represented?
If you have autism, how do you feel about your life, what is your perspective on things?

I've met a number of people through a social/support group designed for people with autism, however I only went to a few meetings. Currently, I don't know anyone with autism unless I'd be counting myself.
Do you feel those on the spectrum are under represented?
Certainly. We live in a world where people have certain expectations, whether socially or personally.
If someone fails to act or behave as one might expect, they are often dismissed.
Elaborating on this, the math says that such a small segment of the population (Google says 1.85% of Americans have autism) is so minute relative to the others that it is bound to be ignored.
If the economy functions well enough and people have normal enough lives, are they going to worry about the random 1 or 2 out of 100 who they don't see or interact with in their day to day lives? Probably not.
If you have autism, how do you feel about your life, what is your perspective on things?
First, I'm 36 and only learned I was on the spectrum 3 years ago. That was a bit of a shock because I'd lived for such a long time without a diagnosis. That being said, I always knew I was a bit different socially and had different tendencies than most people, so it wasn't a complete shock. However, I always associated autism as a severe disability where someone couldn't communicate well or function well in the world. I've learned it's all relative and my diagnosis is merely a perception from the medical community.
Most people, neurologically speaking, have certain tendencies that are seen as 'normal' in the eyes of most people. There is no medical diagnosis for this, nor is there for some behaviours that others may find unusual, simply because these behaviours or tendencies are common place in society.
On the other hand, those on the spectrum are diagnosed by the medical community for their condition on the basis it presents different behaviours and outcomes than the majority of people experience.
Ultimately, a diagnosis of 'autism' is an opinion from the medical community because of the behaviours of a statistically small representation of the population. I believe that were more people to exhibit these tendencies, it is less likely autism would be seen as a condition altogether.
How I feel about my life at this time is ok. I have a lot to be thankful for. Since receiving my diagnosis I've received some government supports that allow me to live independently where as before I struggled. However, still struggle to find a job or have meaningful relationships.
That is probably the most difficult thing about my life. I'm able to survive, but I have experienced years upon years with seemingly little to no progress in my life. That being said, I still find myself relatively content in my isolation.
Am I happy? Well, I guess I'm as happy as I want myself to be. -
I dated a girl who had a 10 year old autist son. Life was very, very difficult at times because of him, especially when he got aggressive, for example grabbing a butcher knife and threatening to kill his mom and then himself.
He could also be the sweetest kid ever, but you never knew.
Then there are people who are perfectly functional, like you Greg, but whose autism creates a few idiosyncrasies in their behavior.
Until a couple of years ago you had no idea you were on the spectrum but maybe some things became more clear for you once you found out. -
I would venture to say that many runners may fall into the Asperger band of the spectrum.
Asperger syndrome is defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It is an autism spectrum disorder, but differs from other ASDs by relatively unimpaired language and intelligence, and often those who have it have higher than average IQs. -
I know several people who have autism. Most of them are the children of people I know well, but I did work with a woman several years ago who is autistic. When I first started working with her, I did not know she was autistic. She was and is super high-functioning and quite smart, but she has issues with social interaction, interrupting people when they speak, etc. I was put off by her almost immediately and thought she was just a rude person until I later learned of her condition. She got a pass from me based on that, but that doesn't mean she still isn't tough to be around, and I'm glad I no longer work with her.
Now, to be fair, not all autistic people have issues like she does, or they learn to socialize better than she has. -
I can't really add anything to the autism discussion.
But I can say, that a good Pretzel makes everyone's life better.
Greg, Zwick's Pretzel is just 3k away from Downtown.
Walk there or get a bus and you are there in 20-25 minutes.
Zwick's Pretzels are the best. Mmmmh! -

how are you going to make money without a job
-
Eventually I will get the job I want, I believe that.
I can also get a piano and make YouTube videos with it, I have a talent for playing the piano.
I've just been putting that off because I'm quite stubborn, I want a high quality instrument and am not willing to buy a piano unless I have enough funds to comfortably buy one. Right now I'm not prepared to do that.
It's all about belief, I believe I will get the job I want (tv industry) despite how reality may appear presently.
Talking about this belief has lead to a lot of controversy on this board from naysayers.. All I can say to them is it's my life, not yours. I don't tell them what to believe.
Belief is so fascinating. You express yours, someone else may try to counter what you believe in projecting their belief onto yours.
When it comes down to it, it seems we human beings are terrified of the power of belief, something which is universal to all of us and easily available with little to no effort. -
This thread has potential.

Greg you have a lot of anger. Why do you think that is the case?

Did you watch the video? I don't appear angry.
How do you figure I am angry? Having a not bad day over here.. -

I guess the way you lash out at other posters and the way you speak about women sometimes. Sometimes on your videos it appears that you are still a little angry but controlling it. Could it be related to your childhood? -

Hmmm.. Well a number of posters routinely go about mocking me.. Would you enjoy it? It's hard to ignore when it happens day in, day out.
I don't think I speak about women in a negative light. Can you provide examples?
Again, if you watch the video, I don't think you can see that I'm angry.
Perhaps it's your impression of me that is leading you to believe I am more angry than I am?
My childhood was ok, but adolescence was tougher.. I can't dwell on it, it was 20+ years ago.
Of course your past shapes who you are. -
Autism reminds me of racism. Some people possess a lack of understanding and empathy so they exclude something they can't relate to themselves. They feel a sense of power by excluding something or labeling something as different or weird to prop themselves up as superior.

Yes, you. And the son of an ex-GFs' friend. And the children of several of my coworkers.

Because his boyfriend broke up with him -

I think a lot of people have tried to give you solid advice about your script, but you seem unwilling to accept that advice. Belief is nice, but what's the action plan? How will your dreams become reality? Are you like Navin Johnson and things are just going to start happening to you now? -

This is a message board, not where pro writers go to receive critiques.
You're under the illusion I am not succeeding because I posted something I wrote
and didn't listen to other people with no skin in whether it was produced or not.
Do you have any idea how many things are posted on the board and how many people have opinions?
I'm doing ok. On the other hand, what are you doing to improve your life? Just wondering, because your angle is always about what I should or shouldn't be doing. For a change, I'd like to learn about your life..
There must be things we can learn and areas you can improve on.. No one is perfect.
