that was awesome.
Lordy I love rock and roll.
Another favorite clash story is from the Combat Rock era...it was viewed by some as a sellout record, abandoning both punk and the creativity of London Calling. Fans *complained* about the band, saying they were just like the Rolling Stones now. I mean talk about backhanded compliments. And I love that they set out to write a hit single with Should I Stay...and this band of rebels did it.
I saw Big Audio Dynamite in around 1991 in NJ. Outdoor show at a college. Mick Jones was so drunk he could barely sing but he had a great time, as did the crowd.
well worth your time, icymi:

I really like Big Audio Dynamite. And that was arguably their best album, for sure.
Same here. My favorite is probably Tighten Up Vol. 88, but all of theirs through The Globe have spent a lot of time in my CD player.
I still get annoyed thinking about the time I missed seeing them. They opened for U2 on the Achtung Baby tour, but something happened (I forget what) and we got delayed driving to the stadium and totally missed BAD. Dang it!
Well, that's cool.
It's funny how these threads get me back in to rediscovering stuff.
I've spent the last couple of days hitting BAD discography hard. They really were underrated. Just top notch.
So, I've come to the conclusion that "No. 10 , Upping Street" is right up there with their first album. Fav. songs:" James Brown", Rewind", "See_MC2", "Contact, "Union Jack". "C'mon Every Beatbox", and maybe a couple of others besides the big hits on the ""This is Big Audio Dynamite."
And I did get to see them. They were magnificent. It was a medium size club in Philly, mid-eighties. They had a really great funked-up sound. Really great groove.
I can't stop listening to them for the time being.

Thumbs up to The Hold Steady.
I would say the Clash's first album.
Second would be Combat Rock
Third London Calling.
I think London Calling is a bit overrated. I suppose it was ground breaking for its time. And it is good. But i don't see it as any big deal that a punk rock band is suddenly playing reggae.
Combat Rock is a great album song for song. I think that album gets downgraded just because it carries the stigma that the Clash sold out with Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or should being top 40 songs. So hardcore Clash fans disliked it purely out of spite. But I think its more bold and innovate than London Calling.
