No, this isn't what happens at all. When you run in cushioned shoes, you are getting more passive energy return than when you run barefoot. That's why cushioning always increases economy when you control for the mass of the shoe, and why lightweight cushioned shoes are faster than running barefoot.

Interesting comparison between Mach 4 and Rebel v2 in the video below. This U-tuber likes both, but picks the Mach 4 and is more efficient in them. Personal preferences will always play a factor.

Interesting, whilst Believe in the Run praise the Clifton 8, they specially mention that Hoka need to move on from EVA, as everyone else has caught up.
