He took a ton of rest, definitely not 60sec.

The fastest Michigan would technically just be the fastest ever 8 mile run.
Who holds that record?

Didn't he take at least a 2 minute "breather" between every rep?
Ehhh it’s not really a breather bud.
It’s a 2-minute JOG right into a 2k tempo.
There is no standing rest at all in this workout, you are always moving, that’s the key. The only point you stop moving is before the 400 maybe to put your spikes on.
Try running a 4:06 1600m on the track, then without stopping, 200m jog in 2 minutes, then a 2k hilly tempo at 4:50 pace.... it’s a super tough workout, you think a 2 minute jog is “full recovery” after a 4:06 on the track? Okay tough guy, I’d love to see you do that.

I'd take Andy Bayer of Ferlic any day.

I seriously doubt Mason ran a 4:09/1:59 in trainers. He probably alternated between spikes (for the track reps) and vaporflies for the Tempos.
Bowerman does harder workouts with only 30-45sec rest b/t reps.
Based on the instagram posts from him and the Very Nice Track Club page, looks like he did at least most of the workout in Next%'s. There was a short clip on either his or their Instagram story (since expired) that had him doing the 1600m and 800m reps in the Next%'s. I'd assume he changed into spikes for the 400m if the poster from earlier in the thread was correct when he said Ferlic took closer to 5 minutes before the 400m

Have you looked at the workout on Strava? All of those “jogs” you are referring to are over 9 minute pace. Two of them are over 10 minute pace and before the 400 he takes 5 minutes mostly stationary.
Obviously this is still an impressive workout, but it seems like there needs to be some consistency in how it’s executed to claim it’s the fastest anyone’s ever done the workout.
I think Ferlic is in it right now. Like I expect him to make the team in an event. He is one of the top 5 American distance runners (1500m and up right now).

HOW? I get the steeple, but no way the 1500m
The culture up there is way too much about crushing workouts. Can work for the incredibly gifted (Sullivan, Willis) over 1500 but so much talent has gone up there and just been destroyed.
I disagree. Bowerman crushes workouts and they have insane results. Same thing with Ole Miss
in 2016 (may 24th) nick willis postet on twitter:
"1600- 4.20
1200- 3.11
800- 157
400- 51.8
4.55 mile pace for 2.1k road loops between each track rep."
and:
"250m jog to the road. Same after the road finishes to get to the track."
a 250m jog to the road is about 60sec for willis, i guess.
This is a ton more impressive than what Ferlic did off of around 3min rest
Only thing about Ferlic is that he's not smooth. He has a governor due to mechanics. I've never said, "wow, what a beautiful runner." He's not silky smooth like Jager or smooth power like Rupp or effortless like Centro. Afraid he may never be an Olympian unless he targets the Steeplechase.
Yeah, when we did this in college our rest was a ~150m jog. I always thought the main point of the workout was that it's almost a continuous effort.
Not to take anything away from Mason's effort here, cause his was still crazy impressive
Big f'ing yawn. Let us know when he wins a race that matters on the global scene or, heck, on the national scene.

I know people who do the whole thing continuous. Makes it insanely hard, but lot of Areobic benefit
Yes, those splits are super solid, but he had a lot of rest. The point of the Michigan is to have very little rest, if any at all. In the "true" Michigan you go straight from the intervals into the tempo reps without stopping. This guy had a total of over 8 minutes of extra time tacked onto his rest. He's nowhere near 13:1x shape.
It's not crazy to think that a 13:25 guy could get down to 13:1x, maybe closer to 13:19 than 13:10 but still
I always find these kinds of comments interesting.
Despite 1) Ferlic training under Warhurst, 2) Willis explicitly stating that there is a 250m jog from the stadium over to the tempo loop, and 3) the fact that the Michigan "road loop" obviously starts like 200m away from the track finish line...you always have someone come on to state that "true" Michigan is purely continuous and doesn't have any rest between the track work and tempo.
So what precisely makes that more of a "true" Michigan, again?
