Well, first of all, he's 19! He ran that 800m very cautiously, but finished like a train which suggests, to me, that he can run quite a bit faster. Historically, he is faster over 800m, one mile, and 3000m than Cram and Coe were at his age, and so anything is possible, I think he's the real deal.

And of course Michael Granville ran faster at 18 at 800m than Cole Hocker ran at 19. None of this is going to reveal his trajectory. Right now it is safe to say that Cole Hocker has the kind of talent that you need to be one of the best U.S. runners. That is all we can say for sure.

It's fast. His finish was fast. He's fast. He's fun and exciting to watch.
I was impressed but I wasn't blown away. Its important to note he was stepping down in distance. I think it shows he has legit speed and will be a factor in the 1500 for years to come
What does it take to get blown away? I get blown away by big upsets, prs, exciting finishes, state champs, conference champs, NCAA champs, USA wins, diamond league results, Olympic medals...I'm a track fan and Hocker (and Oregon) are one of the biggest stories in 2021 track, so I am blown away.
Now does that guarantee him world records and Olympic gold? No, but he is in the hunt and I will be following.

Well he is certainly not in the hunt for any world records and really not Olympic Golds either. However the rest of your post makes sense. As far as hunting for Olympic Golds, Hocker might be in the hunt to be a U.S. champion some day, maybe even fairly soon.

Yes, Granville ran 1:46.45 at age 18. His PB at age 19 was 1:46.45, which is currently faster than Hocker’s PB. Granville’s PB at age 20 was 1:46.45. His PB at age 21 was also 1:46.45 and so on and so on...
On the flip side, Hocker, at age 19, has run 1:46.60 in his first outdoor 800m in 2 years. He has run the 1500 m in 3:35.63 (on the way to running a mile), the mile in 3:50.55, and 3000m in 7:46.15, which no US 19 y.o. has ever done (boom, boom, boom). In addition, he has run 13:32.95 as a U20 in December, ranking him 5th all time for US U20 ( in his first 5000m ever??? - not sure about that last statement).
Furthermore, it is believed that he did a 7:45 time trial when he was a U20 (current U20 record is held by Ryun in 7:47.8)
The only thing he has never done is beat Centro.
What else do you want from him?
Does he also need to walk on water?
IF you were bright you would know that my post did not in any way insult Hocker. If you were smarter you would know that someone said he is faster than Coe and Cram were at 19 and my example of Granville is to say this means very little about his expected trajectory.
I would make an argument that you can't actually deduce whether he is faster than Coe or Cram because technology has advanced so much since then. You can say he has run faster times, but trying to create a direct comparison with the advancement in track surfaces and spikes is actually just absurd. Everyone on here is talking out their @ss at this point because we really have no clue how good he is compared to historic greats.
Cole's ability seems to go 1500/mile>3000>800>5000. Although as he goes on I assume his 5k will improve and be better than his 800.
The cockher is not overblown.
What about that laptop?

Check the collegiate outdoor leader list. He's #1
In fact, the time would have been top 20 in the NCAA for the last few years.
people who don't get much from this and Athing Mu's 1500 performance are being a little obtuse.

Remember, he is FL champion. No FL champion ever had 800>5000. So I also expect his 5000>800. Actually, I think it already is. His 800m would rank him 10th in the U20 ranking (he is no longer a U20). However, his 5000m ranks him 5th.

I would argue his FL champ teammate is better at 800m than 5000m.

Yes but a Footlocker runner up arguably had an 800 better than a 5000 and he certainly would have won if not facing one of the top 5 U.S. high school cross country runners in history.
One interesting thing here is that a number of posters are saying that at 19 we don't really know if he will develop into Olympic medal material BUT everybody seems to think that 18 yr old Athing is unstoppable.!
Hocker just did what many emerging elite 4th and 5th year seniors could hope to do in the first week of April and as a sideshow event. No, he is not in Donavan Brazier territory but where we are in fact keeping score is between Hocker, Teare and Centro.

Back in his prime, Centro, the defending 2016 Olympic 1500 Gold Medalist, would be REALLY happy with a 1:46 right now and Hocker basically just ran that on his opening weekend of true freshman year outdoor just screwing around and having fun.
Speaking of screwing around and having fun, what would really piss Centro off would be a a Shelby-Hocker May-December thing before the trials and to hear first hand that the younger Hocker outperforms Centro at other long and short distances too.

I don't agree that everybody seems to think that 18 year old Athing is unstoppable, but she is closer to medaling right now than Hocker. No one can no for certain how much either of them will develop.
