How deeply insensitive. I hope that Kara Goucher does not follow her or pay her any mind.

    I hope they both make a full recovery. I hope that when they do they don't post on instagram about how "I recovered and I'm just fine! Masks off everyone! and by the way, don't get vaccinated!"

    Oh yeah--they are anti-vaxx. Just to add insult to injury there.

    I was wondering that too. Although the podcast seems like it was too long ago for that to be the case.

    I three co-workers recently to the disease, two working in physical security and one in cleaning services. I work in a place that's open to the public. My friend's husband (late 40s, with pre-existing conditions) also passed from it. I'm not sure what's so improbable about losing that many.

    I would have love to have told you I don't know anyone who died from it.

    Simple math makes it unlikely: IFR for working age people is very low, multiplied by the fraction of people contracting the disease in a given area (low-ish), multiplied by the number of people you work with.

    Julia has been VERY vocal about covid and anti-mask, anti-vaccine, it’s not that big of a deal, etc. I can guarantee they were not taking any precautions and now they both got it and she is pregnant. Probably thought she was invincible being young and healthy and thinking covid was no big deal. Hope no lasting side effects and that baby stays safe.

    Her husband was an elite athlete long after high school. You know, like when he set the American record in the mile.

    I had many occasions to speak to them when they (and I) were younger. I'm sorry that Julia, in particular, has turned into such a narrowminded nut.

    This is terrible. A bad COVID 19 case plus late term pregnancy is a very bad place to be.

    It is tempting to throw stones at Julia Webb as she is a minor celebrity in the running world with a few thousand followers on social media. When you have an audience, you have responsibilities. Julia's COVID denier/anti-vaxxer posts were very irresponsible. But her politics have caused harm to her health and family and that is more than enough punishment.

    But her views were not her own. She grabbed on to anti-science disinformation on COVID and vaccines that have been flowing freely in conservative political and religious social media. It all seems harmless to boost this disinformation in exchange for clicks and followers because in the US we are very adamant about free speech. But there is real harm inflicted by ignoring science and public health in favor of a narrative that better fits your personal political leanings. This should not be something that people have to learn about the hard way. That is anarchy. We as a civilized and advanced society should not be forced to tolerate disinformation and the intentional undermining of public health as a price to pay for "free speech".
