Because steeple is for the guys that couldn't make the state meet in high school in the mile or two mile.

Some coaches push people into the steeple. Others don't. It is sort of like asking why a lot of 800m guys don't make a go of it as a miler or 1500m guys move up to the mile. Imagine you are a 149/340 type runner. Do you think your odds of are better to turn into a 147/335 guy or run like a sub 820 steeple? It isn't an easy choice.

I forgot about him! looked it up and his pre-Oregon PR would be #6 on the Oregon list, but he never ran fast enough to make the list while there.
