The prep record for 400m is a 44. For a mile it's 3:53. 1:46 is extremely soft by comparison.
It could mean HS kids don't have the pureness of hate for it, but fact is foreign under-18s have already gone 1:43.
Real reason is anyone fast enough to beat 1:46 is gonna have to run countless 200s, 400s and relays for points. American system is either sprints or distance and no in between.

IAAF points for reference
44 = 1214
3:53 = 1162
1:46 = 1143

I think what they mean is deepest 800m of all time. Sadly they are wrong there too.
2014 new balance nationals had 5 guys run from 1:48 to 1:49 all in the same heat. Donovan Brazier also won that race. The reason they don’t post that is because they don’t have the rights to it.
That must be the race I saw. Brazier blazes a :49 for whatever reason then nearly walks it in for a :60 second lap. Bonehead. He’s become a much better racer.
Brazier didn’t take the lead until 60 meters to go. He actually negative split his 1:48. You’re thinking of John Lewis in 2015.
This should also be in the consideration. Top 5 under 1:50, with 2 1:48's. And Isaiah Harris.

Oregon Centennial Invite 2001 or 2002, cant remember.
Mike McGrath of Lincoln High School "Mighty Mouse" ran 1:47 against rival Joaquin Chapa - son of Rudy Chapa 1:49 / 1:50 something. Incredible race under the lights, thousands of fans. I can still remember the roar of the crowd yelling "whoa" when McGrath accelerated on the backstretch and created a 20 meter gap in less than 300 meters. Incredible.
Where's the kid from NorCal that ran great last year in the 800 and was trying to qualify for the Olympic trials haven't seen anything from him this year? Yet.

IAAF needs to explain its reasoning in better detail. 1:46 isn't close to 3:53.
