I have some decent high school athletes that I am coaching and have been getting different types of workouts and training plans from other coaches.
From a team standpoint, I feel that a team full of athletes (especially with girls) is to have athletes that can be successful from 400-1600m. These may not be all-star 400 runners. But if someone can run 5:20 or better in the 1600 I would expect them to be splitting close to 60 seconds in the 400 for a solid 4x400 leg.
However most of the workouts I have seen have athletes pushing between 30-40 miles a week with multiple runs of 7-10 miles a week.
Does a girl really need multiple 7-10 mile runs a week and 30-40 miles a week in order to run sub 5:00 and sub 11:00? Or a high school guy to run 4:30 and 9:45?
I have been thinking more of a plan that does two track workouts a week (Total of 5-7 miles between warm up and cool down, one long run of about 25% of the weekly mileage, and then using the other days to fill in mileage between 20-30 miles depending on the athlete.
Thank you for the input!
