The winner of the emerging 2 mile and the 5k beat him for the Michigan cross country title. Should be fun seeing them compete.

Yes, although to be fair, they were in different sections because they ran the state XC in heats. Hard not to think that Kessler could have beaten him if they ran in the same heat.
There was little wind...he’s the most talented kid I have ever seen

LRC Note. This thread was started before the race. We changed the title after it took place.
If u go by the splits posted Hobbs ran 54.99 last lap
Has Hobbs (yes, Bored, Hobbs's is correct - one syllable words ending in "s" take the apostraphe and additional "s") committed to a university yet?

I think NAU

More talented than Jakob I? That's kind of the measuring stick for talented kids

8:39 for 2 mile is a nice run but it’s equivalent to a 3:45 for 1500m. My gosh Jakob ran 3:28 as a teenager. That’s not even in the same league.

How ? Based on his training, Kessler seems like a speed based miler. His mile results are also far superior to his XC results, so mikkie's assumptions makes sense ... He came 2nd in his state meet (in weird format though .. ) yet he's the fastest hs miler ever. A guy who is better on the short distances should try to go for the win in the last 800/400.
He came in 2nd XC 4 months.
7 months before that he was a 4:22 1600m runner.
He’s improving by leaps and bounds so you can’t compare this XC to his mile.
He certainly would not get 2nd today.

Talent is not measured by absolute times.
2 years ago today Hobbs was a 5 min miler just starting to run.
2 years ago today Jakob had been training like a professional for 20 years.
10 years*
Interesting. Do you measure running talent by how tall he is, heavy, smart, how many beers he can drink. How much money he has, how good looking he is, what his favorite food is, who his girlfriend is, or how fast he runs? I usually use the metric of time run when I judge talent. But you are free to use one of random metrics that I listed.

I agree Jakob sets the standard for young runners outside Africa.
But Jakob has never run a 2 mile. If 8:39 converts to about 8:00 in the 3000m Jakob ran that at 16 (alone in a championship race).
In the mile Jakob ran 3:52 at 17 but 3:30 in the 1500m which converts to 3:47 in the mile. So in the mile Hobbs still have some ground to cover!
The Dane Joel Ibler Lillesø ran 7:52 in the 3000m recently at 17.
Another Dane Axel Vang Christensen ran 3000m indoor earlier this year in 7:59 at 16.
Nico Young ran 3000m in 7:57 indoor in the 3000m at 17 in the beginning of last year.
How old is Kessler? Nico is only 18 and there are other 18 year olds in college who ran faster than 8 minutes.

It wasn't the same race -- he ran his time, then the dude that "beat" him ran that time in the next section.
Although if you want idea of how good Ritz was, I think both of their times were more than 30 seconds slower than Ritz's 5K NR (since broken, I believe) on that same course back in the day.
Correction: Jakob ran 3:31 in the 1500m at 17. This converts to 3:48 in the mile.

It is if you consider that Kessler has spent about 1% of his life training for running while Jakob has devoted his entire childhood to the sport.
As far as racing experience, Ingebrigsten has run more races in a single week than Kessler has run his whole life.
Kessler is raw talent and Jakob was at an early age but is now as trained as a young athlete has ever been and is no longer "raw" talent but simply talent realized.
One area where both talents diverge:
Hobbs Kessler's wheels appear to be significantly faster than Jakobs

Little known fact (it’s just what I do):
Both times Hobbs and Riley Hough were in the same race this past fall... Hobbs beat Riley. In late August head-to-head he won 15:14-15:17. Then at the CC Town MOC in Terre Haute after the state meet, he was 2nd in 15:16 to Judson Greer and Riley was 11th in 15:27.
At their state meet, where they ran two sections, Hobbs ran first and put down the 3rd fastest time of all-time on the MIS course with a 14:51. Then Riley put down a 14:49 in the subsequent race. As a junior.
The state meet has been there since 1996. Here are the sub-15:00 performances.
Ritz with the legendary 14:10 in 2000.
Hough 14:49 in 2020.
Jason Hartmann 14:51.0 in 1998.
Kessler 14:51.8 in 2020.
Grant Fisher 14:52.5 in 2014 on a ridiculously windy day.
Maverick Darling 14:52.8 in 2007.
Dustin Voss went 14:54 in 2003.
I'm more excited to see what Kessler can do some day, as Jakob is already a known entity. Kessler appears to have the potential for at least equal greatness, and that's something I haven't seen in a U.S. middle distance runner of his age since AWebb.
