From my work and client prospective we had everything from no symptoms to flu like symptoms so i would do it after the race just in case. You don’t need the second shot exactly four weeks later. I personally had a headache but otherwise I think my legs were all fine.
Just how many legs do you have?

You shouldn't get the Covid vaccine, or at least the 2nd shot.
^Underappreciated post
FWIW, I'm getting it today and planning to race in 7 days. I decided I'd draw the line 2-3 days out since that is the time period where people report having symptoms like those described here - seems like 4 days afterwards people are fine, though hard to say if there are lingering effects that are less obvious.
Hard to say what I'd do in your situation without knowing all of the context:
- How important it is for you personally to get the vaccine - for example will your lifestyle change, are you at any realistic risk, etc.
- How much flexibility you have in rescheduling
- Are you in the shape of your life and likely to PR? Or only in ok shape?
If you're in PR shape and have some flexibility, I'd push it back to be safe if it just means you have to be careful for another week or two.
It seems a reasonable question, but It is so subjective--I mean, so many different individual reactions!
My partner was laid low with illness, aches and pains for several days, but I only had a slightly sore upper arm for one day.
I think it's worth the gamble. There'll be many more races, but not so many opportunities to *very possibly* (allowing for the lesser possibility that there'll be unknown side effects, etc..)
Health-saving benefits.
Based on friends (mostly mid/late 30s that were eligible based on “frontline” jobs + coworkers & older family members: for those that had strong reactions, it was brief (12hours-2days)... none them are athletes though, so their back to normal after a day might mean something different.
If you’re worried about it, just reschedule. Having to wait an extra week or two isn’t a big deal (as others have mentioned, the ~4weeks between shots protocol is just what they used in their trials to gain EUA, not necessarily the definitive optimal protocol).
I'm 38, run 5 miles a day, and can't remember the last time I was sick, it's been at least 2 if not 3 years. I was fine after the 1st dose, even went running afterwards. However The 2nd dose of the vaccine not only left me bedridden for 36 hours but I couldn't keep food down, had fever, chills, sweats and headache. I went through all the symptoms of a flu in 24 hours. I now understand why Olympic athletes wouldn't want to get vaccinated as I estimate they will lose 2-3 days of training and probably won't fully feel themselves til day 4 or 5. Having said that, the forced rest may do you some good and if it's not a high stakes race, you should compete.

The reaction to the 2nd shot of the mRNA vaccines really varies a lot but may be less server for those over 65. One of my aunts and uncles in their 70's had much more mild reactions after their 2nd Moderna shots. Neither exercise other than house cleaning and light yard work. My aunt is overweight but no serious health issues. She said she had mild symptoms--99.5 degree temperature and resting pulse rate of 115. She had a headache and was tired so she rested all day and was fine the next day. My uncle is a few years older and has COPD so he can do little work around the house and yard. His only symptom after the 2nd shot was a slightly sore arm.
Snippet from below document:
The most common solicited adverse reactions associated with mRNA-1273 were injection site
pain (91.6%), fatigue (68.5%), headache (63.0%), muscle pain (59.6%), joint pain (44.8%), and 6
chills (43.4%); severe adverse reactions occurred in 0.2% to 9.7% of participants, were more
frequent after dose 2 than after dose 1, and were generally less frequent in participants ≥65
years of age as compared to younger participants.
With the exception of more frequent, generally mild to moderate reactogenicity in participants
<65 years of age, the safety profile of mRNA-1273 was generally similar across age groups,
genders, ethnic and racial groups, participants with or without medical comorbidities, and
participants with or without evidence of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection at enrollment.

3 days after and you might still have some lingering side effects (nothing major, but enough to knock you off your A game)
5 days after and you should be completely fine
Common Moderna adverse effects and their duration from the below document:
Local adverse effects reported in clinical trials include injection site pain (92%), swelling
(14.7%), erythema (10%).
Systemic adverse effects reported in clinical trials include fatigue (70%), headache (64.7%),
myalgia (61.5%), arthralgia (46.4%), chills (45.4%), nausea/vomiting (23%), axillary swelling/
tenderness (19.8%), fever (15.5%).
Local and systemic adverse effects were usually reported within the first 1–2 days after a
vaccine dose, had a median duration of 2–3 days, and were reported more frequently after the
second dose of the 2-dose vaccination series.
I had my 2nd Pfizer shot on 4/2. I ran my planned 4 mile recovery paced run 8 hours later with no issues. The next day I did a track workout with no problems. I have experience no side effects from the vaccine. It is now 35 hours since I received the vaccine.
