TLDR; For those who have successfully broken 3 hours in a marathon, what was your mileage and did you do doubles or singles, and what difference do you notice training with doubles vs. singles?
My PR marathon from ~2 years ago is a 3:06. Then I was running ~45-50 mpw. Last year all my races got cancelled, but I've still been running ~45mpw for most of the pandemic and have a "virtual" marathon that I am "racing" this weekend, so I have been able to maintain a decent base of fitness.
I am signed up for a "real" race in September 2021, and at age 37 I need to go under 3:05 to qualify for Boston, but I REALLY want to break the 3-hour mark.
So I am starting to look at training plans with a bit more mileage - like 55-60 mpw. Seems like most plans once they get north of 55 mpw throw in a few doubles per week.
The issue for me is from a logistics and time-management perspective, it is WAY easier for me to just do a 1.5-hour run in the morning as opposed to a 30' run in the morning and a 1-hour run in the evening (or any run in the evening, for that matter....I just have a ton more time in the AM). My main concern is injury with increased mileage - I have read and heard running doubles helps reduce risk of injury, but I have also heard the opposite since you are looking at reduced recovery time between workouts.
