wind wasn't an issue ... he looks better in workouts. could he be overtraining? yep! he should just go for it in one of his youtube videos. i bet he would get it.

Sure the wind wasn’t great. But I am seriously doubting that this kid
1. Wasn’t racing the workout
2. Wasn’t lying about the splits
Running those times, even with the rest, is insane. I just won’t believe it until the results are there

Only one second faster than the third repeat in his 3 x mile workout from a few days ago.
He was not has the same wind conditions.
Also it was 3x1600 hand timed, this run was probably 4 seconds faster than that. But still a bit disappointing.
The pacer didn’t do him any favors taking him out about 4 seconds off pace at 1000, but given he could only close in 59.7 he wasn’t going to get there regardless. Probably could have put up something like 4:03 though.
Welp 406

He’s a 17 year old kid. This race was hyped up and there was a lot of talk about so maybe the pressure got to him. Maybe he was having an off day. Maybe it was a mixture of both of those things, but the results ARE there. 4:01 as a sophomore. This is his season opener. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.
Wind "wasn't great"? It's 18 mph! He should have run indoors at yesterday's LRC Invitational.
Maybe it was a non starter.
Inadequate pacing
No "race" to speak of.
And wind which, I wasn't there, but it can wreck this kind of thing.
Needs to get in a race with sub 4 guys.
I do think he’ll get it if something like the adidas dream mile or music city or a pro race he can get into happens this spring
In the footage it didn't look like anything near the supposed 4.06-4.14 pace, more like 5 min pace.
No. The "it" was becoming the youngest to break 4. No question he will break 4 at some point.

Forgot to say Liquori got a silver at the World Cup. Still, not great as a whole for that list
You forgot Liquori owned the USA 5,000m record @ 13:15.1 / 1977... Marty was the real deal.
the mann wrote:
Jim Ryun-good career with a Olympic silver
Tim Danielson-Never broke 4 after high school and killed his wife
Marty Liquori-Only made one olympics and was plagued with many injuries but ran some good times and had some NCAA champs
Alan Webb-made a couple world finals and won 3 international races. Most would say a disappointing career.
Lukas Verzbicas-got in a cycling accident and no longer competes
Matthew Maton-extremely burned out
Grant Fisher-doing amazing
Drew Hunter- has really not done much since going pro
Michael Slagowski-extremely burned out
Reed Brown-TFFRS has him listed as running 3:38.76, 3:56.61. Ran 3:59.3 almost 4 years ago now. Not exactly a good progression
Hobbs Kessler/Leo Daschbach- Remains to be seen.
Out of all of those guys, only Ryun had a career that lived up to the expectations career. Looks like Fisher is going to be good, and I guess an argument could be made for Webb or Liquori, but I would say no.
Liquori was ranked #1 in the world twice in the 1500/mile and once in the 5000m. He wasn't plagued with injuries; it just happened that the two major injuries of his career were in 1972 and 1976. Think of him as the anti-Viren.
Webb is the American record holder and made enough money to last a lifetime.
Harrison's a racer. 4:06 isn't bad given the conditions, first one back, and lack of competition.
Throw him in a fast field and who knows what he can do.
He should rest up for now. Everybody is doubting that mile repeat workout, well if it's real (which it is), he's just a little worn out. He was icing his shin a couple videos previously and was basically like 'I should be good' for this sub-4 attempt.
He'll get sub-4 by being in a pro race like Hobbs and not trying to get sub-4. "The times come with the competition."
he seems like a good kid
I wish him well

Why is everyone on these message boards such a novice when it comes to understanding running performance. I am a college coach, former pro and elite college runner. I've had drop down mile repeats closing within 5 seconds of my personal best in a mile. When you are really strong and warmed up, you can do some incredible stuff in workouts. Just look at some of Galen Rupps intervals sessions..
Anyways 4:06.1 in 15 mpw winds is about a 4:00 mile in no wind. I'm not sure what the humidity was, but that and the pacing play a big role too. This is his first race of the season for the mile which is absolutely incredible. It's obvious this kid can go 3:57 in the right race and right conditions in the next month or two. Which is is absolutely freaking incredible for a junior in high school.

It was about the same wind at my race yesterday. I still PRed and barely noticed the wind. Ppl make such dumb excuses. Whatever. The dude will be sub 4 in high school. He's right there.

He's broke. That's why he's working a sh*tty coaching job to pay the bills.
3 questions (or series of related ones):
Who is this guy? This thread is the first I'm hearing of him. Is he just another braggart who posts on YouTube in the interest of fame and notoriety? Was he talking up a storm about sub-4 and not really coming close? Did he claim to run in workouts about as fast as he did in this race?
What is the deal about this race? Did he organize it himself? Did Tinman? He is not affiliated with a school-sanctioned team nor coach, right? Is the track and timing all legitimate?
Does Sham claim to have participated in this event?
By the way, I noticed last place was slower than 4:50. Embarrassing! That was sort of a benchmark for me in high school. I would be real psyched to go under. But pay attention here: that was on a ball-bearing gravel track with training flats in the context of a longer workout training for 10k. I didn't run significantly faster, but then again I never ran on a Mondo track, in a race, with spikes, after training for the event. If I considered myself a high school miler (and certainly if I was older than that), I'd have dropped out as opposed to logging a time in the neighborhood of what I did for an individual repeat on a random day after school.
Hold on now.... wrote:

Then the problem is with you not him.
