here are my fall 2021 podium team predictions for XC nationals!
women:
1) NC State. I think NC State has a very talented team that could become great if they're all healthy and ready to run. Tuohy made an impact even though she was injured for a long time and I expect her to be better next year. Starliper is obviously a big question mark but I think that she has the talent and potential to be great next year for the pack. On that note, I'll take a healthy Starliper, Tuohy, Clairemonte, Chmiel, and Steelman as an unstoppable scoring 5.
2) BYU. I really liked what I saw from the squad yesterday and the culture seems great. When Orton gets back to 100% and the squad is fully together, I think they'll have a great squad. Ana Weaver, the incoming freshman from MN & state xc record holder, might also make an impact on the team.
3) Arkansas. Arkansas wasn't at their 100% at yesterday's meet, but they have undeniable talent and are only getting richer. I fully expect Thorvaldson to make the varsity squad next year and for Ewert to step up a bit. Add in Gregory and Gear, and I think they'll have a strong, third place squad.
4) Stanford. Stanford had an uncharacteristic run from Dudek yesterday and still managed to get third as a team. I think Dudek will do better next year and Stanford will be the final podium spot.
HM: UNM, Michigan State, Minnesota
men:
1) NAU. I just can't see NAU being beat with their killer top 4 and adding the high school national indoor record holder. They are a team with so much talent, as well as a great coach that knows how to prepare them. I expect them to win by a margin.
2) Oregon. They are a major question mark, yes, but their performance at indoors for the distance events makes me think that they'll do great things on the course. Those guys can run, and though the mile/3k doesn't reflect perfectly onto XC 10k, Teare has done great in the past in XC and it's hard to imagine that Hocker won't be up there with him. They have a deep squad that I think will get runner-ups at XC.
3) Notre Dame. Their run yesterday has the be respected and they're team obviously has a lot of talent. If they run like they did yesterday, they'll be top 3 for sure and might even take the second spot.
4) BYU. An unusually bad run yesterday doesn't take away from their talent. Because of their regular season success this year and their roster being deep, I have them taking the last podium spot at 2021.
HM: Stanford, Arkansas, OK State
