for not trying to beat Mantz and Kiptoo. He just played it safe and held hands with teammates for the whole race. Prefontaine would not be proud.
Mantz deserved the W so much because he ran with pure guts and bleeding.

4th place finish as a true freshman leading NAU to a dominating team title? That is far from a disappointment
i know you're just baiting but nau could have easily lost if nico went for it and blew up. team race is more important than a freshman not running the way you want them to lol.
Prefontaine got 4th as a freshman
dear Sham 69,
he played it safe so that his team could win, which they did, convincingly. pls get off of these message boards.
sincerely,
byesham

He's used to it.
Ah dang Sham - too bad you weren't there to be a man with with your 18:00 5k PR
Was Nico Young the top freshman of the class going into the year?
If I'm not mistaen, Cole Hocker was the Foot Locker champion, Leo Dalenbasch is the one with the sub 4 minute mile and Cole Sprout ran 8:51 at altitude for the 2 mile and three was a guy who got 4-flat solo who is running at Oklahoma State (Ryan something)
I did check NAU's web page just not but I don't see anything for him
Yeah I’m sure he cares ?
He ran for his team and it payed off. The team will always be more important.

NAU is interested in the team title, they accomplished that....you want to go for individual wins go to another school, maybe down the road but no way were they letting him go today, good solid pack running by the number 1 and number 2 teams, plenty of hs and college coaches could have learned something today....pack em up, strength in numbers
Nico Young in high school would go in the front all the time and win, so why couldn't he do it today?
Someone mentioned Prefontaine, but give him a break. He didn't have that much talent (his words). He was too short and had small legs. If he had been blessed with Nico's stature, he would have been able to do anything.
Running with teammates is not a skill. That's something you do at practice. Nico could have done so much more if he had GONE for it!
Now he'll possibly be beating himself up for months: all because he was too afraid to run with the big boys. He could've been first, but settled for fourth.
Prefontaine got fourth in his only Olympics, but the fact is that he WENT for it, so his legacy isn't completely tarnished.
Mu gets beat in the 400m at Nattys: "Oh it just wasn't a good run for her"
Young gets 4th to lead to a team to a title. "What a scrub. Run with guts next time"
You really think he'd try to run a gutsy race his first time racing over 8K on the national stage? Come on. he ran the smartest of anyone out there imo.

Pre was 3rd as a freshman. Still not sure why people take the bait from Sham 69 though.

You do realize that Mantz was a solid 32 seconds ahead of Young? You really think that there's a possibility that Young could've won first? His last 1k was 13 seconds slower than Mantz's. Maybe if he had gone a little earlier, he could've caught up to a fading Kiptoo, but that's about it.
If anything, you should be upset with Grijalva, who beat Mantz earlier this year, or Nuguse, who finished right behind 3 of his teammates as the 5th scorer on his team.
Sham, what is actually wrong with you?
Great run, Nico. Incredible running NAU!
Nico Young is 18. Connor Mantz is 24.
Wesley Kiptoo doesn't even have his birthdate listed with IAAF.
lol. sham is one the very best posters here. maybe half a notch below 430 miler
