...former Auburn star, Chris Fox. There will be an announcement next week.
I'm sure there is more than one Chris Fox running around, but I thought I remembered a Chris Fox as a pretty damn good runner for UNC in the mid-80's. Did he run at Auburn as well???? Is this the same guy??
Chris Fox ran for Auburn in the early 80's and was a 6x All american for them. Excellent range from sub 4 mile to a 2:13 marathon. Coached at UNC (Chapel Hill) and George washington. Don't know if he was a good coach. I believe he's married to Kristy Johnson who was second in the 2000 Marathon trials.
It's about time someone of Chris's caliber gets hired at a school like Auburn...there's a lot of money and potential. Chris can and will do some great things there.

i read a lot about this guy being an awesome runner but how good of a coach is he? anyone know what kinda training philosophy he has, is he cool/jerk, or what?
He coached at UNC Chapel Hill for a year or less, but decided not to coach there after that for some reason, he also coached at George Washington for a short time. He hasn't coached in a while, at least collegiately. He has an internet business that sells team uniforms. Don't know what his degree area is or any other coaching experience. I would think he would know a great deal due to his tremendous running experience and success. He hasn't developed anyone that I have heard, but then again hasn't been anywhere long enough to have had the opportunity.
Chris will do a great job at AU. I was fortunate enough to have trained with him (while being coached by him) for many years. He has a sound training philosophy and tremendous experience and know how. Although he has not coached at the colligate level for any great length of time, he has always been involved with coaching and guiding runners. Besides his running assets, Chris has great character and tremdous work ethic. AU got the right man for the job, hands down!!
sounds good but do you have any idea as to how he would go about training a 800/1500m runner? im hoping he is kinda like layne anderson (previous auburn coach) and will focus on quality over quantity. you said you trained with him, how is he in that respect?
Why was Layne Anderson let go? Where is he now?
Fox is the man. 8:55 high school 2 miler. 13:24 I believe right out of college and ran for AW. And a 27:53 10k at age 38!. He coached at North Carolina and took their team to nationals in 195. Also coached All-Americans George Nicholas(World Cross Trials champs) and also James Farmer. He will do very well at a school with the resources that Auburn has.
That would be 1985.
Hey guys, I don't know if this is such a good move for Chris. If you want Auburns XC schedule you look it up under "Track & Field".
I get the feeling cross-country, to those good ol' boys, is something the KKK does.
Good point Malmo (I'm picturing hooded robed rednecks with torches roaming the hills)
It brings up the question of how important it is to be in the right program to have success in certain specialties). Today with the scholarship cutbacks its even more important. Auburn was strong back in Fox's day (real strong) but I wonder what the scholarship limit was then. And can anyone tell me how Spivey has done down at Vanderbilt so far?
He should recruit the midwest guys heavily who would love to get out of the tough winters. They can head north back home for the summers.
He is good with milers.
Vandy has Zero funding on the guys side, I doubt Spivey stays long. Just long enough to say he has D-1 experience.
Auburn has done very well in the sprints and throws but has also had success in the 800-1500 meter events on the mens side. The women have done well throughout the 800-10,000. Not national qualifiers but placing high in the SEC. The team now has experienced veterans and should have three to four women at nationals if the ladies continue their improvement in events 800 through 5K this year. With three sophomore finishing the season with 2:08 800 meter times (that have successful cross experience), the 2001 junior national champion in the 1500 meters, Catherine Waynoki (sp?) who is from Kenya and will most likely lead the Tigers and Narissa Johnson an all sec selection and national qualifier in cross in 2000, plus they picked up a footlocker finalist this year and have 1-2 more returners that will give the team great depth. This team should make it to nationals.
Auburn is loaded on the women's side. The men have struggled in events over 3000 meters but probably don't have many schoalarships to work with, but when a school has had guys like Avard Moncur, Coby Miller, and Gabor Mate they aren't exactly wasting scholarships, these guys are like getting a Webb or Ritzenheim (or better). Plus they just happen to have a good group of 800-1500 meter runners. Anderson recruited a good group of freshmen that came in this year that are more apt to the longer distance races. More two milers than 800 guys this time while in high school.
As Chris Fox proved at Auburn, distance runners can excel there. He has a terrific group of coaches to work with (track and Rachel Sauder in cross), an outstanding women's team and a young mens team that has experienced leaders. He's going into a great position.
Spivey was hired to coach the women. They had an SEC steeple champion and provisional qualifier last year, so he could be doing all right. If I remember correctly, Spivey\'s presence has something to do with his wife\'s career, as well. So I don\'t think the answer can be quite so succinct as you might think.
I don\'t know about Auburn nowadays, but in Fox\'s time, they were very strong in cross and a fairly egalitarian team. It\'s hard to go back to the \"good ol\' boy\" days once you\'ve tasted, shall we say, more sophistication. So give \'em a break.
I do recall, however, racing for Vandy down at Ole Miss in 1982 and discovering that we missed the Klan march in downtown Oxford that day while we were running.
Mind you, the South of both schools has come aways in 20 years.
Word around campus is Fox will have all the money he needs to recruit, and wherever. He'll just need to get the commitments
Spivey coaches only the women and his recruiting class this year is solid, probably one of the most overlooked and underrated. They were voted to finish 5th in the coaches' pre-season poll. Don't be surprised if they finish higher, and they could be running in Terre Haute...they finished 5th last year at regionals. Their team is better and deeper this year. I pulled the below from the Vandy website.

Later that same day, she placed 2nd in the 800 meters. At the Oregon-Washington Border clash later that season, she ran 2:11.21 for the 800 metes. Brittany Sizer, distance runner from Kingwood, Texas, graduated from Kingwood High School. Miss Sizer has also run the 1600 meters in 5:10. Brittany plans to study business in college. Her parents are James and Janice Sizer. Brittany was coached by John Barr.
That was 5th in the SEC.
Your Mom...wants a drink
I wasn't speaking of the Klan in a literal sense. Of course the South has changed.
