Reading Malmo's SoM posts, he recommends running at least some doubles throughout your training block no matter the mileage, but I see people on here post that unless you're in the 50-60mpw range, running doubles won't do much for you.
Anecdotally, one of my friends plateaued at a 19:50 5k for 3 years, and when he finally started doubling a few times a week (ending up around 40mpw) he finally had a big breakthrough and got down to 18:20 and ran a 4:55 mile indoor.
Is there any evidence that doing doubles at 35mpw isn't better than 35mpw in singles?
