so are we pretending that everyone in the race besides centro was peaking for this race and not the olympics, as if not peaking in winter is a rare and advanced technique invented by bowerman track club
He’s now in his 30s and the 1500 wheels are falling off. Willis was able to stay fast in his 30s but he was coached by mid distance specialist. Centro is old and now with a 5k group and 5k coach. He either needs to commit to the 5k and move up or find a mid distance coach.
Hahah yes good point.
I'm sure Josh Kerr isn't even thinking about the Olympics and had 2021 and the pandameic induced calendar riding on last night. Good for him though

Never put a drug cheat on a clean team.

Who do people think will be contenders in the 1500?
I'm seeing a ridiculous amount of talent--Kincaid, Lomong, Chelimo, Emmanuel Bor, Ryan Hill, Drew Hunter, Grant Fisher, even True as long shot for the 5K
But I only think there's 2 really strong guys in the 1500. I could imagine Yorks, Josh Thompson and Gregorek look really good and are in the right age range, but I'm rooting for Drew Hunter. Any chance he can drop down? I also wouldn't mean seeing Yorks in there.
Not happening for Drew, but I could see Cooper Teare going for it while still in college. A solid number of Oregon runners have made the Olympics while still in school, and Cooper's always been very ambitious at the championship level. His incredible consistency the last couple months and 3:50 indoor PR are making a strong case for calling him a lock for the Olympic team.

I had the opposite take. I thought he looked great until the last lap. He ran aggressively. If he stays healthy, he's a lock.
Just merged two threads. One sayign Centro was done and the other saying he won't be in Tokyo.
+1 Had heard he was only 85% fitness. Looked about right. Anybody want to name 3 Americans who are going to beat him?
1. Engels
2. Brazier if Pete lets him run the 1500 at the trials, although he'd definitely opt out of the team
3. Cooper Teare (already faster at the indoor mile than Centro ever was, and more consistent than Centro has ever been)
4/5. Gregorek and Thompson can both beat Centro if he's having any less than a perfect race
Rookie trying to predict.. Stick to something you are good at like predicting the weather after looking outside.. He will be primed, it's his training phase..

Agree with the poster above.
https://www.olympicchannel.com/en/video/detail/men-s-1-500m-final-race-rio-2016-replays/Centro’s inside pass on the third lap of the Olympic final was the greatest move by any American distance runner....ever (not an exaggeration).
Let’s not forget that he made the exact same move at his very first WC (in the semi, had he not done it he wouldn’t have even advanced) and then he took bronze in that final.
Have heard him say that when he saw the opening in Rio he knew what to do because he had done that same thing previously.
The CHAMP gets the benefit of the doubt until he crosses his last finish line at the 2021 Trials. Speculators and doubters sound incredibly lame. I feel dirty and dumb even engaging in the convo.
it's everyone else's training phase too. they will be primed.

Maybe he does not make the team this year. He's still an Olympic Champ and no one is taking that away from him.
As the defending champ, doesn't he have an auto spot?

True for WC, not OG.

No doubt. A lot of short-term fans, wishing Centro's demise for some reason. He has a proven career, proven ability to deliver. Social media morans got worked up about his IG response and now think his head's on the block because of a 3:40 outdoor rust buster in March.
This thread will very likely have some posts RIPE for bumping in a few months.
Don't bet against winners.

Are you trying to say you think Nico Young would be Cilantro in a 1500?

no
Centro has been doing this just about every season. He comes out in early races and doesn't kick hard, leading to lousy results that get everyone saying that he is done. Then, over the summer he has better stuff at diamond league meets, but still isn't crushing it. At WCs or OGs, he puts it all together and gets a medal.
The real question for Centro is whether his racing really reflects his fitness and he is carefully timing his peak or is he just phoning it in early in the season to avoid injury and to sort of do a rope a dope and get everyone thinking he isn't a factor.
I’m questioning his move joining Bowerman because they while they do focus on strength and he is getting older, he seems to lack a lot of speed and this has been like this for a while now. He still has time but with only a few months to the trials I’m actually a little concerned. I think he’ll make the team because just about every US champs or trial is slow but once he hits Tokyo I’m not sure if he’ll make the final. I see a move up to the 5k after this year.
people keep pointing to previous years where he had bad races and bounced back and there could be some merit to that...but getting older isnt going to help his cause and certainly should be factored into the likelihood that he bounces back from this. plenty of time before the trials and ultimately the olympics to pick things up, but with what we have seen so far this year i wouldnt be surprised if someone like Teare was our best option for the 1500 at Tokyo.

Teare ran a 3:50 INDOORS. This is not what you think it is. Teare might run 12:50 some day but he will never run 3:30 and the 1500m is not his event on the world stage.
