Each matchup is determined by the best of of 3 in 5 random categories (out of 45 possible categories). Categories are based on objective facts, and in most cases 2019 data is used. 2 matchups a day until the final.
Day 1 we first see the 33rd seed, Sacramento, CA, go up against the 32 seed, Mesa, AZ. This is a clean sweep by Sacramento! Sacramento wins the first 3 categories that are selected, Most runners at the olympic trials, most runners at the boston marathon, and best finish at the Chicago Marathon.
The second matchup of day one got very interesting and went the distance with #64 seed Blowing Rock, NC, almost upsetting the #1 seed, New York City. Round one we saw New York get out to a lead with the best finish at the Boston Marathon, but Blowing Rock quickly struck back with the best Running weather during the month of April. New York city again took the lead by having the most number of races within 50mi, when once again Blowing Rock, NC struck back by being located at the higher elevation. The last category was going to decided it, which ended up being definitively in New York's favor, Biggest race the city hosts.
#33 Sacramento and #1 New York City will move on to face each other in the 2nd round.
