How can there be this many good Japanese marathoners yet they're complete non-factors in Marathon Majors? I get that their sponsors want them to concentrate on domestic marathons but look at Kawauchi -- he gets major pub by running international marathons.
The same reason why Colin Bennie isn't a factor in a world marathon major. The reality is 2;08 isn't a super competitive time any more.
Hell 2:04:56 isn't necessarily competitive either.
17 times people ran faster than 2:04:56 in 2019, 16 times it happened in 2018. Hell 2:04:58 would have placed you 8th in Valencia in December.
And 1 guy ran that. The reality is 2nd place was 2:06:26. You think a 2:06 guy is going to win a major in the year 2021? Maybe in 2021 when all of the majors are back to back and half the field is at the Olympcis but I doubt it.
