Somehow almost everyone opening their pie holes on this thread completely missed the New Years ekidens. And Fukuoka. Nobody who has been paying much attention is remotely surprised by this race. The Japanese are dialed-in on developing road runners, specifically half-marathoners and by extension marathoners. None of this "well, I'll go to the track for 10K as a contingency plan" or anything like that. It's all-f#cking-in, do-or-die, the-marathon-is-my-girlfriend. Having nice corporate budgets and a team of identically focused teammates behind that is a big help, unlike say Saucony who doesn't give two sh!ts if you're 6th in the marathon OT in PR time or 4th in the 10K and get lapped or whether you train with nobody else who races longer than 5K.
And the course is short like it was short in Boston when Ryan Hall ran sub-2:05. GTFO, American idiots.
