i don't think masks should be worn while running. i'd rather they cancel races instead of encouraging this nonsense.
of course, i'm no longer a HS or collegiate runner, so I don't have much to lose with a cancelled season, but i have noticed that easy efforts become taxing while wearing a mask. i'm shuddering at the thought of hammering any distance with one.
I ran 10 miles this weekend with a mask on, averaged about 7 minute pace. Granted, that isn't a race, but still, it didn't kill me. I'd prefer to have had it off, but the path I ran out was a lot busier than I expected. With a cotton mask, it keeps you from accidentally launching small bits of spit into the air but doesn't restrict your breathing too badly. It seems like a reasonable middle ground while running.
I am surprised they're requiring masks at races, though. I'm in California and the high school kids aren't required to race in them.
Here, masks are required right up until the gun goes off, then as soon as practical when they finish. We are limiting races to only a few teams, no invites, and the post season is cancelled. Courses with chokepoints are out, and finish and start lines are bigger than normal. Kids are required to wear a mask at practice any time they're not actually running, and they have to run their easy runs in small groups.
So I agree with the article that we shouldn't require kids to race in a mask, but I think the author is being a bit over the top, kids aren't going to keel over from wearing a mask, they'll just run poorly if their mask is tight/restrictive.
Mask wearing and other "COVID protocols" are a religion. Zero science.

I mean yeah. Someone’s gonna die from lack of oxygen.
Science SUCKS. That's certain.
you are bad at running and bad at being a person

That’s false, jamin (regardless of whether they should be required during HS XC races). Just a lie to advance your 100% selfish agenda. Google “mask efficacy study” or something.
Other Covid protocols (not sure why it’s in quotes except to make you sound like more of a jerk) like social distancing aren’t based on science? You seriously think you’re so special and so smart as to categorically waive the most basic understanding of epidemiology, not to mention common sense?
At this point I would vote to not require masks during competition...but come on, man.
Congrats on doing nothing to prevent anything other than looking like a massive fool.
If you ever have surgery, I hope you demand that your surgeons are unmasked.
The person receiving surgery usually wears an anesthesia face mask so that the anesthesiologist can control what the patient breathes. Why shouldn’t the surgeons and nurses wear masks? ?
The studies on mask use are observational studies, not scientific studies with control groups. Therefore, they are more open to interpretation. And that interpretation is usually based on one's agenda and/or personal belief.
As of today, NY and NJ has the highest death rate in the US based on COVID deaths per million of the population. In COVID cases per million of population, they rank 30th(NJ) and 32nd(NY). Both are below the average number of cases per million in the USA. Both states had mask mandates from the very beginning. Therefore, based on an observational study, masks will slow the spread of the virus, but it will increase the number of deaths from COVID.
The reasoning behind this is while masks may slow the spread of coronavirus, it also prevents and/or slows the spread of people's flora, which is essential in the body fighting off infections.
So the governors and states that have mask mandates, prefer to slow the spread of the virus by having more people die from it.
If I do a rain dance every time it goes with no rain for 7 days, and it rains the following day 92% of the time, is the rain dance bringing the rain or is it just that I live in a climate that long term sees rain on about 30% of the days. In one case, it's religion, in the other it's science.
The problem is if I accept the fact that the dance brings the rain, I never try to study or understand weather patterns.
I'm not saying masks do not work, but I have never seen any proof that they do work, so until that happens do not call it a scientific fact, it's just a theory.
So he does not look like a fool? Is that what you meant to say?

If it was an emergency, I would not mind whether they wear a mask or not.
Great article. Wearing masks while racing is just ridiculous. I ran a race recently where you were required to wear a mask while passing, so I would pull the gaiter over my face. I only had to do this a few times, and I honestly felt like I was suffocating each time.
When they make swimmers wear masks, they can do the same to cross country runners.
Another article on the foolishness of requiring outdoor masking:
https://kevinbeck.substack.com/p/its-time-to-retire-the-outdoor-masking
Indoors? For the love of God, wear a mask. Outdoors? Not necessary unless you're congregating at close proximity.
High risk folks should have a vaccine by now anyway.
Jamin isn't always completely right (is anyone?) but he's 100% right on this. People are starting to figure out they have been deceived, even if some on letsrun haven't figured it out yet. I'm confident they will apply some critical thinking and come to their senses eventually too.
Great links in first article linked below. Second link is what many smart experienced front line doctors (who have been censored and de-platformed and in some cases, fired from their jobs) actually think about all this and what they have seen first-hand. VERY revealing. I dare anyone to read the first article and links and watch the video at the second article and not come away questioning the mainstream narrative that has pervaded since last March. I could link to so much more but these 2 cover most it pretty well.

Stretching is bad because we don’t like it. Masks are bad and don’t work... because we don’t like it.
Anything else we should add to the list?
Surgeons wear masks and other PPE due to potential of blood exposure from rupturing arteries, organs etc where the risk is far greater. Did we mandate wearing masks with the flu or cold viruses are prevalent. No.
If the surgery I am having takes place outside, yeah I'd be fine with the surgeon not wearing a mask.
