You should not have any issues at 36. That is still pretty young for a runner. If you have knee pain, you may have patellar tendonitis or something of that sort. Take some time off until the pain is gone and then build back mileage very slowly. If that doesn't work, go see a good chiro/physio who works with runners to see if there are mechanical problems that need to be addressed. If that doesn't work, it is time to go to an ortho to see if you have a tear or some arthritic changes.
I ran pretty high mileage from about 33 to 46. At 46, I got patellar tendonitis in both knees. I had to take almost a year off from running. But after that, my knees felt as good as ever. My knees gave out due to my failure to adjust training and recovery for my age at a time when I was also not able to train consistently due to work and travel. Age related adjustment should not be an issue until you are pushing 45. Early 40s is a breeze.

I agree that mid30's is very young and MOST people do not see real signs of aging until mid40+, a 36 year old isn't as spry as a 22 year old. Aging is real.

for other posters wondering about how serious my 'issue' is, well it's not that big a deal, I've just found that it's hard for me to put together more than about 3 weeks of running consistently t 30-40 miles/week before needing to back off and take a break.
For example the last week I've still gone out for a walk of about 4 miles every day, sometimes longer, but my body needed a break and I only did one short run.
I ran consistently until I was 73. I never had any problems with my knees or legs, except for occasional calf tightness. It was my left hip that ended my running. Now I walk about four miles a day without problems. I ran the last 35 years, almost exclusively, on dirt and backed off as soon as I felt any unusual soreness. Never tried to 'run through the pain,' unless it was a race. And I endured a lot of pain in those races. The discomfort of the effort, not knee pain.
You need to get in the habit of taking all your joints through their FULL range of motion every day. A couple of dozen rock-bottom goblet squats with a light weight each day (even assisted - hold the kitchen sink). If all you do is eccentric contractions (shock absorbing on landing) through about 30% of your knee's range of motion, it's not ideal.

ok bozo 26:21 8km is 5:16 pace. Not quite 5 min pace but much closer to it than 6.
Anyway you look at it, getting heckled by people who are far slower than you on a competitive running message board is amusing.
No I didn't run a marathon because I didn't fall into the marathon craze and feel a need to compete in one. Knowing I had the ability to run in the 2:40's didn't mean I had to do one. Running 2 and 2.5 hour training runs gave me the knowledge I could have completed the distance.
I'll sit satisfied with my PR's while you slow pokes tell me about how I should and shouldn't be training with your 3+ hour marathons and 30 minutes 5 mile PRs.
THIS. Full range of motion every day is huge. Low bar back squats with an unweighted bar (20 Kilos) does more for hip and shoulder mobility than any stretching exercise for me.

I didn't do a 10k but I did 57:58 for 10 miles on a fairly hilly course. This is in Edmonton, over 2000 feet above sea level and at that distance it makes a bit of a difference.
Whether I would have run a 2:40 marathon? Well, I felt I had the ability and my 8k/10 mile times are in line with that kind of performance. I did my training, I already am a better athlete than you and I ran 18 and 20 + mile runs in training. Wouldn't I have a better idea than you, a clearly slower and less superior athlete?
This isn't worth arguing about.
Do you want a pat on the back for finishing a slow marathon? If you still want to feel better than me for your >3 hour marathon, get help because you have deeper issues.

He's not wrong. None of the running you have done is the reason for the way you are breaking down. Elite runners are older than you and still cranking out 100 at paces you could only dream about.
Whether one is fast or slow gives virtually no more credibility when it comes to falling apart at 36. And none of that difference of opinion is going to change anything for you.

57:58 for 10 miles gets you a 2:41 :04 Marathon. But that is just a theoretical number.
And that is the reason why we race. To find out how fast we actually are.
You in the meanwhile sit in your white cube and think about what you could have done IF you would have ran a Marathon. But you didn't.
You have a good 10 mile time to show if the course was long enough but that's it.

Well, he is wrong in the sense this is
-a competetive site geared towards competitive runners.
Him being a 3 hour+ marathon runner he falls into the hobby jogger category.
Who said my body is falling apart? I just said I get a bit more sore than I used to. I can still do 4, 6 and 8 mile runs and even longer if I want.
Remember, this is a competitive site. We are all entitled to our views and traditionaly on Letsrun, the slowpokes have been lower on the pecking order. All I'm doing is putting 'Edmontonian50plus' in his rightfully deserved place.
He doesn't have to be on lets run if he doesn't want to, and a 3 hour marathon is NOT worth bragging about and he should know that.
Being mid 40s , I was going to chime in on this thread and agree running does start to suck a bit with niggles and just general stiffness that lasts for days or longer than it used to.
However as I'm slower than you and your acting like such a funkin jerk bragging about how 'fast' you are I'm not going to bother. Meh.
