Just got the vol III Daniels book. I’m puzzled by why he never talks about doing tempos in phase I or phase II, yet everyone talks about doing tempos in base. I thought threshold was really important to work on in base for 5k runners. Discus
Why doesn’t Daniels do tempos in base

The problem with a book is that they're often "cookie cutter" approaches to training. I've always wondered if Daniels deviated from the formula he gives to us.
Does the chef deviate from his cookbook when preparing a meal?
I asked him a question at a clinic one time and he stated something about scientists changing one variable at a time and that each phase focuses on a different variable.
With that in mind I often added some shorter cruise intervals early on to prepare athletes for tempos. -
with no races ahead.
only easy running with maybe 60% is good.
but you could do one tempo per week.
hill sprints, broken tempos, contionous tempos 20-30 minutes at treshold.
short sprints. but not too much and only 'once' per week. just run volume!
