some athletics winning streaks:
Iolanda Balas: 144 (or 150 in some sources) wins over a decade including two Olympic golds and several world records
Edwin Moses: 122 wins over 9 years, 9 months and 9 days including two world records Olympic and World titles and many super fast times which are still ranked high 4 decades later
Carl Lewis (LJ): 66 wins over 10 1/2 years including two Olympic and two World titles and dozens of jumps who would win almost any competition today easily
Let's now look at this fantastic 4 or 5 years long 800m winning streak of Ovett:
After two fifth places in Montreal and Zurich 76 (the two only real deep world class 800m races he ever took part) and another loss to Mike Bot, the streak began at the end of the 76 season with a notable 1:47.95 win. The streak was in full flow now and continued with fantastic wins in 77 with times of 1:54.9, 1:58.1 and 1:48.31 against local British 3rd tiers. The athletics world now started counting: 4.
In 78 Ovett was unstoppable over 800m with wins in 1:49.0, 1:45.38 (super fast for his standard). Then the winning streak continued with a loss in his lifeteme PB of 1:44.09.
Same picture in 79: a great win against 2nd tiers in 1:46.17. Then the next loss in his great winning streak to James Robinson who run a good 1:44.70. But Ovett fought back with a great win in 1:49.54 against some polish world beaters.
1980 saw more great wins in 1:49.17, 1:46.6 and 1:48.16. Then he won the Moscow final in which he acted like a contender for the next IBF world title.
More great wins in 81 with fantastic times of 1:47.96, 1:47.0, 1:46.40 and 1:49.13.
In 82 he beat 19 year old Peter Elliott who directly went to the race after working for his steel corporation. Then Ovett faced a decent hurdler and lost.
But the astonishing number of "wins" is 19 (including some losses) mostly against unknown British athletes and with his fastest win in this wonderful winning streak still within the top 4000 performances all time.
Just wondering why I have heard about the winning streaks of Balas, Moses, Lewis before, but not of this fantastic one from Ovett.
